Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber has set a Friday deadline for AC Milan to complete a transfer deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy for English star midfielder David Beckham.

Garber said Wednesday that the league will not approve any transfer that is not completed by Friday even though Beckham's three-month loan to the Italian club does not end until March 8, 11 days before the US league's season begins.

'There is no reason why this should drag on,' Garber said. 'They either want to do it or don't want to do it. This Friday we need to know if they want to buy David Beckham or not.'

MLS should play absolute hardball on the Beckham transfer, in fact, this is part of being taken seriously in the soccer world. Becks value from a marketing standpoint is higher than the value of his skills regardless of who he plays for. If Milan doesn't want to pay the necessary funds he should return to MLS and they should wait for someone who will, for example, an EPL team. The loan to Milan has shown Beckham can still play at a high level and has upped his value. Any team who signs him will have a very valuable marketing coup and their merchandise sales will increase drastically so they should have to pay for this. Yes anyone will overpay but it is only overpaying if you look solely at his skill level. Add marketing revenues and it is not overpaying or at least not to the same extent.

I agree entirely. If you don't want a player to go you tell him clearly that you are not selling, that he has to honour his contract. And he stays and plays, simple as that. Another thing would be for Beckham to insist on the club buying certain players or types of players to raise the overall level, that would be fair.

The other thing is if the club needs money desperately and decides to sell if the market is right. Has Beckham's marketing value really dropped off so considerably that the investment is no longer viable, or enough to argue that they have gotten all they can from him, better sell?

But in all cases, when a player is under contract, it is the club who should be clear on things. And clearly Galaxy are totally confused, and they've taken their confusion into the league, and even the press is teetering, when it is not such a complicated or unusual issue in world football.

It is kind of funny to see Garber complain about people dragging their feet on making a decision... considering he's pushed back the announcement of the 2011 expansion teams, what, two, three times?

Yes that is a real irony ;)

I guess the uncertainty is affecting ticket sales already. I bet he will be back for the last 2/3rds of the season. He will finish the Serie A season with AC Milan.

Tis dead. Stick a fork in it.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - David Beckham's request for a permanent move from Los Angeles Galaxy to AC Milan, where he has been on loan, fizzled out on Friday when the Italian club failed to raise their bid for the player.

Well AC Milan are not crazy. Gatusso will be back soon and they've got all the mileage they are going to out of Becks.

Back to the minor leagues with you! (say it like "no soup for you")

Like I said it was never gonna happen. Because Becks isnt that good and nowhere near worth the amount LA's is asking Milan could spend that money elsewhere on a muhc better player

Beckham has an out clause at the end of this coming season.

Yep. So MLS has to start planning the post-DB era real quickly! They thought they had him sown up for 3 more years but DB to his credit wants to play at a high level.

it was a prematur emove on his part guys of his talent should not be in the MLS unless the are of North American descent or over 35.

Becks must be kicking himself for that decision. If you're gonna come to MLS early you gotta be the type of player that can do it all: dribble, cross, defend, play different positions, etc. OR else you'll just be frustrated because of the calibre of players on your team. But as a specialist, Becks was never going to make a big impact in MLS on the field. He obviously didn't think through the decision to move to the Galaxy.
