Tyler Hughes will join Atiba Hutchinson's old club Östers IF for a try-out directly after the canadian national team camp in january. Öster, presently in swedish 1st division (2nd level), is looking for a new left back that can help them regain a spot in the premier division. According to a local newspaper (http://smp.se/article.php?args=489018,102;0;0;0 ) Hughes also have an offer "from a club in the american league", but Öster's management is in no doutb that he'll choose Europe if it comes to that.

Speaking of Osters (Mark Watson's old club), they had Jamie Peters trial with them last season and turned him down for a contract.

I guess they are loaded with talent.

Well, they didn't exactly turn Jamie Peters down, but they thought that the kid should have a youth contract:

Jamie Peters, the 16 year old on Canada's olympic team who just returned from a week long try-out with Östers IF, now has an offer from the club to join as a trainee. The club has a program that will let Peters complete his high school education while training football at a professional level. Peters impressed highly on Öster's management. They call him "extremely talented" and also reveals that Manchester City wanted to sign Peters, but ran into the usual work permit obstacles.

Tyler Hughes has agreed on a 3 year contract with Östers IF, writes local daily Smålandsposten. Other swedish clubs, including premier division ones, has shown interest after his performance in the training tournament last weekend, but he decided to give Öster a first chance to present an offer. Appearently it was good enough. Hughes hopes to be able to move on to a bigger club if he does well with Öster.

I think one reason for this is that the Lynx don't have the budget to sign established/a bit past their prime veterans like the Whitecaps do but can afford to sign talented, promising but inexperienced young players. The negative side of this is that they have a poor to mediocre team. The positive side is these young players have lots of chance to make the team and get a decent amount of playing time which helps their development. Unfortunately for the Lynx once these players start showing their potential they usually have to sell them. The Lynx are a great model for a development team with the purpose of producing Canadian talent although this is probably an unintended result of lack of financial resources. The Whitecaps are a model of a professional soccer team concerned with its own interests in fielding a competitive team. In the long run the Whitecaps model will probably do more for Canadian soccer if there are enough similar teams but in the present poor state of the pro game in Canada, the Lynx have developed more players than the Whitecaps. The Impact are probably a good balance between the two team concepts.
