As with their commencing play during the second half of the season, the announcement of a planning application at Belmont Park again (IMO) reinforces the premis that the Cosmos are fighting tooth and nail with the MLS, for the hearts and minds of soccer fans in the big apple; Perhaps with the Cosmos currently one step ahead?

Mind you, It does helps if you have a Sheik in the Shaddows.

Interesting podcast with the Cosmos' COO. They're expressing no intention to go MLS - implied because of the brand they feel the franchise system won't work for them. He talks about helping to grow the league, being the best team in the US, and it being a process where they won't dominate from the first kick in anger. He says the RFP was at least 2 years too early for the club, but given it was out there, it was an opportunity they couldn't pass up.

I think the target Audience is not neccessarily coming from Manhatten but Queens village and Elmont etc.

If you do have the hots for the Cosmos and live Central parkway then you'll be "travelling" like Man United fans do.

They are starting up in Hofsta stadium 7 miles away. So it looks as if there is an intention to be the team from long Island.

That stadium would sure help in that regard. It is something else.

Dandy Don actually went to the same University as I did...no I never knew him.

Anyway with the planned seating at 25K...they are just insane and it's sure to rile up the locals...but it's going to be a fun battle to watch...

If, in the summer season Hofstra has about 5K turning up on a regular basis, then yes 25K will seem like utter folly. If however, they pack it out for every game then 25K may not seem that far off the mark.

In a couple of months well have what HG NELSON (Australia's Parody commentator) calls "Sport code#2: THE REALITY CHECK".

All that been said, considering that the USOC is a seeded competition, what are the chances of a COSMOS/ NYCFC match up within a couple of years?

I don't think it's the end of the world if they get 5K initially. The stadium they are planning is a big thing here. It's a destination in it self.

If this was the case for sporting KC, they should have only built a 10 k stadium, if anything at all.

When they finally get their stadium built, the Cosmos need to poach the best non-DP talent from MLS. They have to market the team two ways, by saying "we have an awesome stadium," and "come see the best professional soccer team in either the USA or Canada."

getting close to considering the Belmont Racetrack soccer stadium project dead:

Cosmos ended a two-game losing streak but drew only 2,419 fans to Shuart Stadium. The Cosmos, who averaged 4,984 fans for home games in 2015, have averaged 3,733 for their first three home games of the 2016 season.

NY Cosmos averaged 5062 in 2015 :

Stadium project bid at Belmont stands on its own, Cosmos have a poor temporary stadium in a terrible area of town at Hofstra stadium, very hard for fans to get to transit wise and their attendance there shouldn't affect the bid. They'll draw much better at their own SSS in a better location.
