Trade with FC Dallas

MLS all star last year. In fact O'Brien and Mulroney were the two FC Dallas players chosen to play against Chelsea so TFC arguably now has FCD's two best players. If true though a good pickup for TFC but they must be pretty much done with their SI and American player spots.

I guess this seals Brennan's fate...he is likely going to play D because it appears that Mulrooney plays the same position.

I was hoping that they would play him outside mid. He has looked pretty good for Canada in that role. Saw him playing D for Norwich once in the promotion playoff game whereby his play seemed very conservative.

I don't think this seals Brennan's fate. Mulroney is not a better player than Brennan but one of similar ability. I think Mo will experiment with who can better play each position and Brennan probably has a bit more offensive upside. On the Big Soccer FC Dallas forum they are mystified by trading Mulroney who was rumoured to be their new captain for a mere draft pick. Speculation is that they are freeing up cap space for a major signing. TFC is really looking like they will be competitive this year.

FC Dallas acquires first round pick, allocation money from Toronto FCFC Dallas Media Relations

FRISCO, Texas - FC Dallas today completed a trade with MLS expansion franchise Toronto FC, acquiring the Canadian teams' natural first round selection in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft and a partial allocation in exchange for midfielder Richard Mulrooney. The trade opens up a spot on FCD's 28-man roster, which will be occupied by 21 year-old Colombian midfielder Juan Carlos Toja. Toja was signed on Feb. 28, 2007 after spending the past year at famed-Argentine club River Plate.

"Losing a veteran player like Richard is never easy," said Michael Hitchcock, FC Dallas General Manager. "However we knew that in order to put ourselves in position to continue improving our team we needed to give up something in return. With this move, we free considerable space on our salary budget, bring in additional resources that will allow us the flexibility to be active in the international player market, and acquire an additional first round pick in next year's SuperDraft."

"Richard has been a tremendous professional during his time here, and has been throughout his career, so this was a difficult decision to make," said FC Dallas head coach Steve Morrow. "However, we are close to finalizing a deal with a player that we feel could make a significant impact on our team and complement the young talent that we have. In order to proceed with those discussions, we needed to make this move. I want to personally thank Richard and wish him the best in his future."

FC Dallas now holds two first round picks in the 2008 SuperDraft - its own natural selection and Toronto's natural selection; and two selections in the second round - its own and Colorado's natural which was acquired in Jan. 2007 in the trade for Greg Vanney.

Mulrooney, an eight-year MLS veteran, joined the San Jose Earthquakes in 1999 out of Creighton University. In six seasons with the Quakes, he played in 163 regular season games, scored four goals and recorded 44 assists.

On Jan. 14, 2005, FC Dallas acquired him along with midfielder Arturo Alvarez, and two drafts picks from San Jose in exchange for Brad Davis, a partial allocation, and a pick in the 05 draft.

The 30-year old Mulrooney scored two minutes into his Dallas debut on Apr. 2, 2005. He started the first seven games that year before suffering a torn right ACL in the 34th minute of his return to Spartan Stadium in San Jose on May 14, and missed the remainder of the season.

On May 13, 2006 - 364 days from the date of his original injury - Mulrooney returned from the injury to the FC Dallas starting lineup, playing all 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw against Houston. He was named to the MLS All-Star Team for the third time in his MLS career and started in central midfield as the MLS All-Stars defeated Chelsea 1-0 in July. In October, 2006, he was recognized by the League as the MLS Comeback Player of the Year. In two seasons with Dallas, he started 30 of his 32 games, scoring three goals and adding 11 assists.

Toronto FC announced Tuesday the team has acquired Midfielder Richard Mulrooney from FC Dallas, in exchange Dallas will receive Toronto's 2008 first round MLS SuperDraft pick, along with a partial allocation. As per team policy, financial details were not disclosed.

Mulrooney, 30, will make Toronto FC his third MLS team in his professional career having previously played with San Jose, and most recently Dallas.

"It's very exciting that we have been able to secure Richard for a very good price, only giving up a partial allocation." Said Head Coach Mo Johnston from South Carolina, "he's a very good competitor, I've always liked the way he plays."

The 8 year MLS veteran joined Dallas from the now defunct Earthquakes January 14, 2005 in a large trade that also involved Arturo Alvarez, and Brad Davis. Since his move to Texas, Mulrooney played a large part in the team's success, and was named as a commissioner's pick in the 2006 MLS All-Star game in which MLS defeated Chelsea 1-0. That same year in October, he was recognized by the League as the MLS Comeback Player of the Year. In two seasons with Dallas, he started 30 of his 32 games, scoring three goals and adding 11 assists.

2005 was a tough season for Mulrooney as he tore his ACL early on, and missed the bulk of his first season with his new club.

Mulrooney has made 14 appearances with the U.S. Men's National Team, his most recent being in January of 2004. He made his debut with the squad December 9, 2001 against South Korea. Amid tough competition in the National team, he was named an alternate in the 2002 World Cup in Korea/Japan.

He spent 4 years at Creighton University, where he recorded 51 assists between 1995 and 1998. His play helped lead the team to the NCAA Final Four in 1996, and was named an NCAA All-American as a senior.

According to the Roster Dance thread, the SI and American quotas are already full. This may be the precursor to another trade possibly for an allocation/draft pick or a Canadian. Mulroney also can not be cheap so they may need to make some salary cap room.

Mulroney apparently played central midfield for FCD. Was well liked by fans but seems to have lacked a bit of offensive prowess for a central midfielder. In any case if he plays central mid for TFC he will not be in competition with Brennan.

It may have been a bit of rust and caution in such an important match. He played mostly Left Mid with Norwich as Chris Drury was the every day left back and would have been on the D only as an injury or suspension replacement. I too hope that Brennan will play in the midfield. It appears that Pozniak is mostly playing as a Centre back with TFC, is that corect? I was kind of hoping he'd start at left back and the Kiwi - Boyens? - being good enough to partner Reda right off the bat. Of course, I am not the coach, and am only thinking of it from the perspective of every day play for some MNT squad and b-teamers.

Edit Note: added "squad" to the last sentence as the observation was not meant as critical and dispareging of either the players named or TFC.

Poz played central defense against Hungary - although it was several months ago now, it is still the most recent match we have played.

I would rather see Poz at right back with Braz in central defense alongside Reda, with Brennan at left back, going with an all-Canadian backline.

They sure gave alot for this signing first round pick and most likely a undisclosed amount as well. HUMMMMM

I'm not sure that this would have been a good choice for a 30 year old, not matter his experience in the midfield. I mean no disrespect to this player whom Im sure is very talented player, and can certainally provide a boost to any team in that area. However personally I think my choice would have been an experience striker with results and simliar season in the MLS would maybe been justified to give up 1st draft pick for 2008...
