Racism running rampant from some Millwall fans...

...over on the House of Fun message board.

I think and hope that they are not representative of the average Millwall fan, but it seems that since the London bombings some people over there feel justified in expressing some rather alarming anti-immigrant views.

I'm sure this kind of thing isn't only being said in Millwall forums, or football forums, but I find it amazingly ironic and hypocritical for Millwall fans to be talking like that given that it was the UK's relatively open immigration policy that allowed them to sign Josh Simpson and Adrian Serioux on the Commonwealth Youth Working Holiday program (the program has since been changed to prevent footballers from working on these visas). If they don't like immigration, perhaps their national team should give us back Owen Hargreaves as well.

I know what you mean. It's disconcertingly eye-opening. The links made between terrorism and immigration are tenuous at best and downright insulting at worst.

I think a lot of it is happening on the Millwall forums because of their upcoming friendly with the Iranian national team (it seems that nationality doesn't seem to matter when you are from a certain general area). It would be a PR disaster to cancel the game however going ahead with it would give the hooligans around a chance to cause some trouble for a team that already doesn't have a great track record with these sorts of things. It will be interesting.

The millwall board is bad, but I don't think they're alone. There's a definite presense in each of the boards I visit where the 'send them all home' faction is loud and clear.

It's disappointing to me, especially since a) most of the people who are believed responsible aren't immigrants and B) the area around Edgware Road where me and G-L spent much of our time in London was amazingly multi-cultural. In fact there were very few 'anglos' around. The hotel, the pub, the restaurants I went to, the internet cafe, they were all run and owned by either non-white Brits or immigrants. It was a great, vibrant neighbourhood.

I hope that doesn't change.

cheers,

matthew

I've been reading the Millwall board as well, and boy is it bad.

It's been a complete eye opener...I was really shocked. I knew it would be bad but I didn't think that the points of view would be so narrow - I expected more two-sided debate, and less one-sided crazyness. I guess many don't feel it worth their while to post against some of the more alarming views.

No Lions in Leeds

1000 tickets returned

No away fans will be in attendance at Elland Road when Leeds kick off their season in front of the television cameras against Millwall.

The London club has decided to return almost 1000 tickets for the opening-day clash, to be screened live on Sky Sports on Sunday, August 7.

Under police advice, Leeds had initially supplied their Championship rivals with tickets on the proviso that all visiting fans had to travel on organised coaches so they could be escorted to and from the stadium.

"We are disappointed there will not be any Millwall supporters inside Elland Road for the game," said Leeds chief executive Shaun Harvey.

"But the potential for disorder was such that this action was required to ensure the enjoyment of the majority of supporters from both clubs was not effected by the potential actions of the minority."

But Millwall Supporters' Club (MSC), who felt the travel restrictions were "unwarranted and unjustifiable", have received the backing of Lions chief executive Ken Brown.

"I quite understand where the MSC are coming from," Brown said. "It does set a dangerous precedent whereby in future the police can stipulate that anyone attending a football match must adhere to the travel arrangements designated by them."

I have been in the UK since October and have had the opportunity to see many games at Millwall and let me tell you that if these to boys can play in front of those fans they can play anywhere. These fan turn on you like dogs over meat. It is not supriseing that theere has been concern over the supports conduct especially the '04 Carling Cup tie VS Liverpool that seemed more like an airport security operation than a football match. I do not see much hope for these fans and its a real shame because there are a few good fans and they all suffer. I personally have had to refund my Iran tix for the terririst scare and I am sure that they fans would have had a field day with the Iranian/muslum community and supports. I know its harsh to say but it has to be said. I will be sure to keep you posted as I plan on attending as many road matches as possible.

Hey, cyris2K how do you like the New Den? Parts of the crowd are a it of an eye opener eh? How do you like not being able to buy a beer in the stadium? Fu'k, how about not being able to buy a beer NEAR the stadium?

Millwall has been fighting the hooligan battle for a long, long, time now. And people forget the young hooligans grow into older, tamer hooligans, but a rougher bunch all the same. No matter how they look. Hell, a bunch of thirty-fives going on seventeen after a few drinks.

And there's never enough security to control what goes on around the stadium. Don't forget that.

So mind your business, enjoy the football, enjoy the energy, and keep us posted. Hoping our lads get plenty of match time this campain and Millwall go deep into The Cup.
