No Canucks in action in the Bundesliga this coming weekend.

Paul Stalteri is upset as he was issued his 5th yellow of the season for being overly exuberant in Boekelberg stadium last Saturday celebrating his teammate Frank Baumann's winning goal in Werder Bremen's 2-1 come from behind win over Borussia Moenchengladbach. He is forced to miss next weekend's home game vs 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Coach Thomas Schaaf was sympathetic though.

Coach Ralf Rangnick is not too happy with Julian de Guzman as he took what would have to be considered an unnecessary yellow in the final minute of Hannover 96's 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich at the Olympic Stadium in Munich on Sunday. With Bayern Munich's win, they leapfrog VfB Stuttgart into 2nd place, 6 points behind Werder Bremen. Should be a great race down to the wire in the 2nd half. Hannover sit in 12th spot in the 18 team table, 7 points out of relegation territory. Julian will have to sit in the stands next Saturday as Hannover 96 host Bayer Leverkusen.

Victor Oppong is with the full 1. FC Saarbruecken team in southern Spain. The Regional League South kicks off its 20th round on Friday February 27th with Saarbruecken hosting FC Bayern Munich Amateurs. Bayern sit in 1st place with 38 pts with Saarbruecken in 2nd place eight points off the pace, ahead of SV Elversberg on goal difference. Bayern cannot be promoted but Saarbruecken will still be in a dog fight for one of 2 promotion spots, with teams in spots 2 through 14 (the last non-relegation spot) only separated by 7 points.

No word on Maycoll Canizales with Werder Bremen's Amateurs.

Still some time before the A-Junioren Bundesliga (U19) is back in action.

Skipped Tam Nsaliwa altogether. His team Jahn Regensburg hung on for a 2-2 draw away to Greuther Fuerth last Sunday (Tam was unavailable, coming back from Olympic qualifying). Tam should be back in action on Saturday as Jahn Regensburg host the "Zebras" MSV Duisburg. Regensburg is in 13th place, 3 points out of relegation territory.

Watford's young French striker Hameur Bouazza, who came through the same Watford academy and reserve system as Canadian international Elliott Godfrey, was given a senior start against Preston North End tonight, due to injuries and suspensions to other Watford strikers.

Bouazza scored the first of two goals for Watford.

Why should we care? Many Watford Reserves contracts are up in March, including Godfrey's..... and since Godfrey and Bouazza are in "competition" for the few striker spots at Watford, Bouazza's likely graduation to the senior squad might see Godfrey released from the club next month.

In Scotland Rhian Dodds was subbed out at the half as Kilmarnock beat Partick 2-1, all 2nd half goals. Seems Dodds has a rocker stopped late in the 1st half as well as another shot that came off an arm, though the penalty was not given. So sounds okay despite the sub.

Xausa started on the bench for Falkirk who drew with St. Mirren 1-1 away, in Div. 1. Not sure if he got time in the end.

Emilio Bottiglieri started for Morton who had to draw in injury time 1-1 with East Fife. They still lead Div 2 by 7 points.

Should note that Bayern Munich fell away to Bochum 1-0, Stuttgart could only draw 1-1, so a win for Stalteri's Bremen tomorrow, home vs. Kaiserslautern without Paul, suspended, will put them well ahead in the Bundesliga.

Simon Rayner was likely in goal, not confirmed yet, as Port Talbot lost at home to lower table Welshpool 0-1 this Saturday. They remain mid-table in Wales.

Daniel Imhof played 90 as St. Gallen fell away to Servette 3-1 as the Swiss Football League (the new official name, in English no less) has resumed in anticipation of the lower Alpine glacial meltdown. They are now into the 10 team Championship round of 18 games, with St. Gallen 7th, three points above the relegation zone.

Fernando Aguiar subbed on m. 89 for Petit as Benfica came back to tie Porto 1-1 at home on a Simao Sabrosa goal. In Fernando's favour reports say that the Benfica midfield of Petit, Tiago and Zahovic was outplayed by Porto's in the first half.

I think he was actually subbed on to stiffen things up as Porto was pushing for the win in the final minutes.

Peschisolido and Hume lead clubs to FA Cup final eight

English FA Cup

The English tournament had a strong Canadian feel to it this past week. Canadian strikers Paul Peschisolido and Iain Hume made sure of this with a pair of spectacular performances.

Sheffield United battled Colchester and gave Peschisolido the nod to start. The Canadian did not disappoint early on, giving Colchester fits and his fellow Blades glorious looks at goal. With United unable to score, Peschisolido took it upon himself to do the honour in the 61st minute. The strike turned out to be the deciding goal, as the game ended 1-0 with Peschisolido going the distance.

Iain Hume - the star who eliminated Bolton with a winning strike earlier in the tournament – found goal yet again for Second Division Tranmere. This time the winner was against upstart Swansea, capping a 2-1 triumph for Tranmere. Hume played the whole match.

The performances of both Canadians drew praise from many onlookers. Tranmere manager Brian Little referred to Hume as “a gem.” Meanwhile, Peschisolido’s performance was described as “the difference” in his match.

English Leagues

Everton disappointed in a 3-0 setback at the hands of Birmingham. Tomasz Radzinski started and played an hour for the losing side.

Jim Brennan scored his first league goal for First Division leaders Norwich. The midfielder started and scored 5 minutes from time to secure 3 points from Coventry. This comes after Brennan looked dangerous and hit the bar last week.

Jason de Vos played 90 minutes on the back line for Wigan in a 2-0 victory. In third place, Wigan is 9 points back of Norwich.

Marc Bircham played 90 in the middle for QPR as they drew 1-1 with Brentford.

Terry Dunfield performed in the first 80 minutes for victorious Bury. The game ended 1-0 with Cambridge United the losers.

Scotland

Rhian Dodds started and played 45 minutes for Kilmarnock as they beat Patrick 2-1.

Kevin McKenna played 90 minutes for Hearts in a 1-1 draw with Hibs.

Davide Xausa was subbed in after 66 minutes for Falkirk in a 1-1 draw with St Mirren.

Europe

In Belgium, Mike Klukowski played 90 for mid-table La Louviere in a 4-0 loss to Club Brugge. La Louviere is currently 11th in a table of 18 teams.

In Portugal, Fernando Agiuar started and played the first half for Benfica. Aguiar’s club won the fixture with Nacional 2-1.

In Switzerland, Daniel Imhof played 90 for St. Gallen in a 3-1 loss to Servette. This was St. Gallen’s first game back after the winter break.

In Germany, Tam Nsaliwa played the first hour for Jahn Regensberg against Duisburg. Nsaliwa’s club was soundly beaten 5-0, with 3 of the goals coming after Nsaliwa’s substitution.

Also

Paul Stalteri and Julian de Guzman did not play for their Bundesliga sides Werder Bremen and Hannover 96. Stalteri was suspended due to an accumulation of yellow cards, and de Guzman was the same after picking up two yellows in a loss to Bayern Munich last week.

Lars Hirschfeld did not dress for Tottenham. Robert Burch rode the bench instead as Spurs’ backup goalkeeper. Tottenham beat Charlton 4-2.

Middle of the 1st half, Iain Hume has just struck for Tranmere to put them up 2-0 over Jason Bent's Plymouth. Bent is not in the lineup.

Here's the BBC description:

21:44 Goal - Iain Hume

Tranmere 2-0 Plymouth.

Cross by Gareth Roberts (Tranmere), goal by Iain Hume (Tranmere) left-footed (low centre of goal) from centre of penalty area (18 yards).Tranmere 2-0 Plymouth. Assist (cross) by Gareth Roberts (Tranmere) from left side of penalty area.

It's a hot start for Tranmere seeing as the last time these teams met, Plymouth were 6-0 winners.
