CSL 2010 Week 11

Recommended Posts

Resullt of the Friday July 16th, 2010 CSL game between Portugal FC and North York Astros played at Lamport Stadium in Toronto at 8:00pm.

34 min...PFC Jaroslaw Radzinski on left crosses ball to PFC Gustavo Serrano who from 12 yards on left is pushed over by Astros Jevon Vanderreyden although by his first touch it appeared like the ball would roll over the end line anyway.

Referee Andrew Kravets calls a Penalty kick.

35 min...PFC Andrei Lombardo GOAL...Lombardo rolls Penalty kick to right side of net under diving goalie Ryan Zamora.

Final Score:......Portugal FC..........1............North York Astros...........0.............

Attendance was about 150 on this hot and humid evening. The numbers apparently not effected by Manchester United vs Celtic international held at the Rogers Centre a few miles away!

Mike Silva had the shutout for Portugal. Both teams had plenty of shots but most were from 20 to 30 yards away. Best of the in-close chances were at 27 minutes when PFC Jarek Whiteman beat Astros Kurt Ramsey to a shadowed ball and he cut a cross behind the fallen Ramsey and PFC Gustavo Serrano blasted a 12 yard shot down the middle but well over the net. At 58 minutes, Astros Alexandre Oran's cornerkick from the left had Astros Mahyar Kohbad (the CSL's leading

scorer) leap and head a 5 yarder wide right of the net. At 72 minutes a PFC player took a low 25 yard freekick up the middle and the goalie tried to smother ball but PFC Branko Majstorovic kicked the 7 yard rebound wide left of the goalie. The Astros goalie was injured in the face.

Astros have now lost three in a row including back to back losses to TFC Academy and are falling in the standings. Tonight's win for Portugal FC brings their record up to 4 wins, 5 losses, 2 ties and equals the Astros current record.

PFC recovers from their last game which was a 5-0 home loss to Hamilton Croatia.

Results of the Saturday July 17th, 2010 CSL game between TFC Academy and Serbian White Eagles played at Lamport Stadium in Toronto at 7:00pm.

10 min...White Eagles (actually TFCA own goal)...SWE Milos Scepanovic cornerkick from right has TFCA Matthew Stinson flick header from 5 yards from center to top left corner of own net with goalie Angelo Cavalluzzo anchored to the center of the net. The SWE players congratulated Stefan Vukovic and I thought he'd scored. It took until halftime before it was finally straightened out.

48 min...TFCA Joshua Janniere GOAL...Janniere rushes through the middle from 45 yards and splits the defence and his 18 yard shot is into the right side of net under the flying goalie Milos Kocic.

Final Score:.....TFC Academy..........1..............Serbian White Eagles.............1.............

Attendance was about 150 on this hot and humid evening. The crowd was actually larger than the last few games at BMO Field right after the MLS Toronto FC game and last week when they were bumped to Brockton Stadium.

White Eagles had some fans at tonight's game.

Gianni Facchini was the referee tonight and didn't give out many cards between the two well disciplined teams.

White Eagles used veteran Sasa Viciknez the start tonight and kept him in for 86 minutes. Shawn Brown was brought in at 60 minutes for the offensive and replaced the other SWE forward, Stefan Vukovic.

Best non-scoring chances were at 14 minutes when TFCA Allando Matheson rolled a pass to Jonathan Almedia at 15 yards and from 6 yards had SWE Mirko Medic make a sliding tackle to poke the ball away. Just after the TFCA goal, SWE Sasa Viciknez took a 10 yard shot down the middle that was just wide right of the post at 50 minutes. At 66 minutes, Matheson broke in on a defender's miscue and his 10 yard shot was stopped point blank by the goalie At 78 minutes Milos Scepanovic cornerkick from the right had a charging Viciknez head the ball from 6 yards just wide right of the net.

TFC Academy players are all trying to make the MLS Toronto FC some day. Some injured players in the press box said there will be some changes to this 'senior' team that plays in the CSL in that some of the players will be taking scholarships and be off to school in late August and their places will be taken by some of the 'junior' team players who play on the TFCA team in the CSL Reserves League.

Closest to making Toronto FC though is White Eagles goalie Milos Kocic. Dragan from the White Eagles is worried that soon TFC will pull its 'loan' of the player and bring him on to the MLS team as their Number 1 goalie. Negotiations are being worked out to have Stefan Frei transferred to English Premier side Stoke City for 3 million UK pounds. MLS league will keep 65% and TFC 35% of the transfer fees. Deadline for this is August 31st.

Kocic has had experience playing in the MLS as he's played for DC United in the past. He also played for Toronto FC earlier this year in the final game of the Nutrilife Canadian Championship against Vancouver Whitecaps when they had already clinched the trophy with one game to go. Ironically that was also the game that seven TFC Academy players were named to the MLS roster for that game.

Tonight's tie brings the White Eagles up to a three way tie for 6th place although they have four games in hand on the teams they're tied with. TFC Academy are held back from leaping into a tie for 2nd place in the thirteen team league.

Thanks for the reports RR and the Frei tidbit. The problem with the TFCA setup is the losing players at the crucial time of the season. I remember the TFCA v. SWE playoff game last year after TFCA lost a number of players to school, it was a total mismatch, very much boys versus men.

^ Wow good stuff and to think people scoffed when I said Milltown FC would be the Arsenal of the CSL. I see Jelani Smith listed on the roster as well, is he still with a NCAA school in Florida? Additionally, Milltown FC wesbite has in the nieghorhood of 40 players listed as being on the roster are they all currently with the team?

Brantford and H. Croatia played to a 3-3 draw tonight in Brantford.

After tonight's result in Brantford, the top 4 teams in the league have all reached the halfway point in the season and are seperated by a mere 3 points (23 for Shooters, 22 for Milltown, 21 for TFC-A and 20 for Hamilton).

Its wild.....and fun!

If you compare us to Arsenal because we are enjoying success while sticking to a fairly young lineup, thank you.

Yes, we have just under 40 players on our roster right now. We train 3-4 nights per week and you can count on 1 hand how many players who aren't present (usually due to injuries). The expectations our technical staff place on the players is high and the players have been meeting and exceeding those expectations.

Jelani Smith is not registered to our 1st team. He was actually just training with us a few times. He has never played a game for us and he goes back to school in Florida soon.

Dino, congrats on the on-going great results for Milltown. I'm rather surprised at how well the side have done up to this part of the season given that you started from scratch and that game at Toronto Croatia a few months ago where Milltown was hanging on at the end. Kudos to the coaching staff and alos identifying players who were under the CSL radar.

MLS rules give teams 2/3 of transfer value, with $500k available to them to use as allocation (rest must be used for "soccer infrastructure"). I can think of no reason why Frei would be treated differently.

Stoke just signed another keeper. There is no hint of this rumour in the UK. I have not heard a thing.

I don't think there is anything to the rumour.

Thanks Al....We really didn't expect to be enjoying this much success but maybe you were our good luck charm because we have not lost a game since you came to watch us play vs. Tor Croatia.

Kudos for our coaching staff are very well deserved. They are very good at what they do.
