Luis_Rancagua
Cameroon star Foe collapses and dies Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe has died after collapsing during an international match in France, world football's governing body Fifa has confirmed. The 28-year-old fell to the ground unchallenged in the 72nd minute of a Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia in Lyon. He was treated on the pitch before being stretchered off and receiving further treatment, including mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and extra oxygen. Foe spent last season on loan at English club Manchester City from French club Olympique Lyon. Cameroon's hollow victory Medical staff are believed to have tried to restart his heart for 45 minutes but without success. "This is a very sad day for football for Fifa and for the player's family, this is all we can say at the moment," said a FIFA spokesman. "Given this situation neither coach Winfried Schaefer of Cameroon or Colombia's Francisco Maturana will be speaking to the media." Cameroon won the match 1-0 but that will pale into insignificance after the news of Foe, who had played more than 60 games for his country. An autopsy will be carried out to determine the circumstances of his death. Foe played under manager Harry Redknapp while at West Ham. Redknapp said: "You couldn't meet a nicer, more fantastic person than Marc Foe. "He was a special boy - I just can't believe it."

Guest Jeffery S.
Geremi and other Cameroon players have come out doubting whether they'll be able to play the final (just heard him on the radio). I imagine it'll be the typical "let's do it for Marc", but it would be understandable if they were affected on the field as well.
Mimglow
Sky Sports News just spent much of their hour talking about Foé the man, his career, and people who were associated with him. Man City supporters have already started bringing flowers to the stadium in a mini-tribute to him. Very, very sad. Mimglow, Ottawa _________________________ Where are the weapons of mass destruction? Luis_Rancagua
According to Foe's Website he died of a heart attack. By the way the article is in French: Marc Vivien Foé victime d'un malaise jeudi 26 juin...2003 Marc-Vivien Foe vient de décéder d'un malaise cardiaque.

DJT
Both articles posted at http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/: Cameroon's joy turns to mourning after Foe death YAOUNDE, June 26 (Reuters) - Cheers of celebration turned to screams of disbelief in Cameroon on Thursday as news of midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe's death followed the team's victory in the Confederations Cup semi-final. Several people collapsed and had to be taken to hospital in the capital while thousands hurried home from bars where they had been watching the game as the streets emptied quickly. State television said President Paul Biya had sent a message of condolence to the family of Foe, who collapsed 18 minutes from the end of the African champions' 1-0 semi-final victory over Colombia. "For a moment we were so happy, but then there was crying in the streets, crying in the districts and crying in the towns. Everywhere there was crying," said civil servant Martha Chinda. "We are all in mourning." It was not clear what had happened to Foe but a FIFA spokesman announced later that his heart stopped after the 28-year-old was taken from the pitch. Medical staff tried for 45 minutes to restart his heart, without success. For most fans, Foe's death made Sunday's final against France an irrelevance. "This is just too much of a sacrifice," said Meh Zang, owner of an Internet cafe. In Foe's homeland, fans weep over midfielder's death By EMMANUEL TUMANJONG, Associated Press Writer June 26, 2003 YAOUNDE, Cameroon (AP) -- In this poor West African nation where soccer provides one of the few joys in life, fans who had gathered to watch Cameroon's match against Colombia wept over the death of midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe. ``Foe's death is the most shocking experience I've had in my whole life as a coach and footballer,'' said Jean Paul Akono, a former national football team coach who had Foe on Cameroon's winning team. ``Foe had been the most frank, most exemplary, respectful player I ever trained.'' The 28-year old Foe fell during the game, which was played in temperatures in the low 90s, and later died. ``This is too much of a sacrifice in a Confederations Cup, for a player who has given too much for his country in football,'' said Augustine Meh Zang, a businessman in Yaounde, the capital city. Cars that had been decorated for victory parades to celebrate Cameroon's 1-0 victory over Colombia sat by curbs, still parked. ``How can one celebrate when Foe dies on the pitch?'' asked Jean Joseph Onambele, a Yaounde taxi driver. In some places, managers turned off the TVs where fans had gathered to watch the game, and locked the doors as throngs of sad fans went home. ``All the beer I'd prepared to celebrate our victory over Colombia is now sour, and I can't drink any longer,'' said Kenneth Wirhlen, owner of a pub where many had watched the match.
