With Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic publicly declaring their support for the Canadian Montagliani validates a clear differing of opinions in the CFU on who is best suited to lead the embattled sub-continental grouping into the future.

“I would like to thank the federations and presidents of Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Cuba for their endorsement of not only my candidacy, but also the vision of ONE CONCACAF. Together we can make a difference in a new CONCACAF,” Montagliani said shortly after a meeting with association heads in the Dominican Republic last week.

Well then, he might actually have a fighters chance. Still a long hill to climb though, the small islands like to stick together and have the numbers to overcome any candidate even if he has the support of all North and Central American nations.

Gordon Derrick is expected to appeal against FIFA's decision.

With 31 of the 41 votes available held by Caribbean members, Mussenden is a firm favourite to defeat Montagliani at the election in Mexico City on May 12. A split in the Caribbean vote could change all that.

Not that Montagliani sees it that way.
