Forward Marco Di Vaio becomes the first ever Montreal Impact Designated Player

It's official

MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact announced on Thursday that the club has reached an agreement with Italian forward Marco Di Vaio, who will become the club’s first Designated Player in Major League Soccer. He will officially join the club pending receipt of his international transfer certificate (ITC), when the MLS secondary transfer window opens on June 27. As per MLS and club policy, details of the deal were not disclosed.

With all due respect to Di Vaio, who appears to be a still-contributing footballer, I look forward to the day when younger Europeans choose MLS as a career choice, as opposed to a last stop. Beardsley, Grobbelaar, even Chinaglia was 29 when he came over.

And if we consider the DP a glamour spot, then I'm not sure he has the cache. But here's hoping he can bang a few in, against all teams but the 'Caps.
