Not really a MNT issue, but saw today that CBC will no longer broadcast Jay's games. In explaining the move, there was a quote to the effect that there is still a lot of sports content out there, specifically the Voyageur's Cup competition (they may have called it something else) and TFC games.

In a related (positive to soccer generally) news item, ESPN bidding for EPL rights. Wouldn't that burn that moron Jim Rome's arse. Love it.

Considering that CBC has lost the rights to a number of key sporting events in the last few years, focusing their efforts on filling the gaping void in soccer coverage in this country would be a very good move for them (and, obviously, us). It may seem counter-intuitive at first, but then, lots of people thought a pro soccer team would never fly in Toronto.

Baseball has aging demographics in Canadian terms, while basketball and soccer are skewed more towards younger age groups. The fact they mentioned the Nutrilite Canadian Championship may be a good sign for further Canadian expansion of MLS given a national broadcast deal has been mentioned as a prerequisite by Don Garber.

That's an odd requirement given the pretty poor quality of national MLS coverage down south.

I think they have national broadcast deals that pay rights to them from ESPN2, Univision, HDnet and the Fox Soccer Channel (can't be bothered checking) and that's important when it comes to landing sponsorship deals. It's a business not a charity so it's only reasonable that Canadian expansion has to provide similar added value to the league from those standpoints.
