June 20 Friendly - Hamilton Thunder v Toronto Lynx

Recommended Posts

The Lynx traveled to Hamilton for a Monday night tilt v.s the Hamilton Thunder of the CPSL and came out on top. The final score was 3-0 with goals from Sean Fraser (2) and recently acquired Said Ali. The Lynx looked like the more dangerous team throughout the night and got a very healthy result in the process. The score could and should have been a lot more but the wholesale changes and players trying new thing kept it at 3-0.

Final score Toronto Lynx 3 Hamilton Thunder 0

Some key moments from the first half

……………Belotte……………Fraser……….

***Robbie playing more of a defensive mid role, coming back to help the “D” and Diplacido playing more offensively minded***

1st minute….. Hamilton come out with a quick attack and hit the upright ( the CFL upright)

7th minute….. Eja Tabe cross was cough out, a dangerous attack on the wing, had the cross gone through it could have been 1-0.

8th minute….. Dick Howard arrives, looking spiffy and talking on his cell.

8th minute…..Weak shot on goal by the Thunder

10th minute….. Lynx corner after the Belotte shot bounced off a defender and went out to touch.

11th minute….. Lynx look to have all the possession and look certain to score at any minute.

14th minute….. Belotte fould hard. Hamilton seemd to even out the possession

15th minute….. Belotte breaks through two and is brough down, no PK call but he does win the corner.

17th minute….. Offside Hamilton

20th minute….. 22 yard strike from Aristadomo, about 3 feet wide to the goalkeepers right.

21st minute….. Game has opened up a bit and is back and forth. Poss. 55-45% in favor of the Lynx. Hamilton is looking for that one long ball to catch the Lynx off guard while Toronto wants to control the game and establish a positional attack. It seems to be working.

25th minute….. Hart wins the ball in the midfield plays lovely give and go with Williams, unfortunately the ball is intercepted at the 18 yard box by the Thunder “D”

26th minute….. GOAL 1-0 LYNX !!!!

Sean Fraser breaks through 3 defenders with his burst of speed, gets inside the 18 yard box and beats the keeper to his left from about 10 yards out.

28th minute….. Nice ball from DiPlacido from 35 yard to Belotte @ the edge of the “18” cought off by the Thunder.

30th minute….. Offside Eja-Tabe. Poss. 60-40% in favor of the Lynx. Its only a matter of time before number two goes in. Even though Hamilton is not playing bad. They are still looking for that long ball for their Japanese striker.

32nd minute….. Offside Eja-tabe ( called by U-Sectorian Frodoschmidt a.k.a. Mike) linesman puts up his flag as well.

33rd minute…..GOAL 2-0 LYNX !!!

Sean Fraser beats his defender chips over the keeper, its deflected he wins the 50-50 ball about 4 feet in the air. Walks passed keepers with little trouble all the way to the one yard line and absolutely punishes the back of the net. 2-0. He could have got on all fours and headed the ball in.

35thminute….. Lynx come close yet again. Fraser once again the danger man. He beats his man twice and crosses with his left foot, the cross is headed out of danger by the Hamilton defense. Unlucky that could have made it 3-0.

37th minute….. Great give and go from 4 lynx players, for about 30 seconds we looked like Bazil. It results in a shot on goal by Belotte. Low and along the ground.

39th minute….. Bruno walks in and sits directly behind us.

43rd minute….. Lynx enjoying about 55-45% possession in the last few minutes.

45th + minute….. End of First half.

Lynx are clearly the more dangerous looking team out there, although Hamilton cant be taken lightly. This game has that feeling to it that the Lynx will concede the next goal yet will most likely score two more.

2nd half line up

…………..Matt ( York University keeper)…………

… © Munthali……Titus…..Ross ( new guy on trail)…..Hart

Williams………Dekkerd……..Diplacido…..Dodds

………………Belotte…..……....Ali………

49th minute….. Lynx playing “Ole” soccerand seem to be controlling everything.

51st minute….. Lynx Corner…….nothing comes out of it.

51st. minute….. Ali hit he cross bar off a header, which is followed up by a shot on target. Lynx are playing very well.

52nd minute…..Long ball to the Thunder striker he breaks through one man and shoots wide from the right hand side. Dodds through ball to Ali, who is playing with jitters but is doing ok.

60th minute….. Eja-tabe for Diplacido (he re-enters the game)

Matando for Hart

Williams moves to join the back 4, Motando plays on right wing and Eja-Tabe on the left.

61st minute….. Ali make a nice run on the left wing, gets into the box has his shirt pulled does not go down, therefore the ref sees no reason to call a PK although it clearly slowed him down and prevented him from getting off a shot on goal.

65th minute… Weak shot by Hamilton goes wide.

65thminute….. Belotte takes on 3 defenders and gets pulled down in what is now called “Doddsy Territory” Dodds steps up curls it over the wall only to have the keeper get th slightest of touches to it and hit the cross bar and go out for a corner. What a Strike, What a save !!!

66th minute….. GOAL 3-0 LYNX !!!

From the same corner Dodds delivers a deep cross which is headed towards the pk spot by Titus and is met there by the tall Said Ali and headed in the net.

67th minute….. Henry (don’t remember lst name, new guy on trail) for Belotte.

This was a good substitution since he just got pulled down hard dew minutes ago. Busby told Hart to take Wyn for a run. They were cooling down and doing drills on the sidelines and behind the goals.

68th minute…. The lynx must have strung 16 streigt passes together. Where is this coming from J

69th minute….. Hard 30 yeard strike by Hamilton, straight at the goalkeeper who holds on it well.

Mattachione on for Munthali

Williams moves to the left Joe goes on the right.

75th minute….. Eja-Tabe shoots wide right

85th minute…. The last 10 minutes have been controlled by the lynx they look to be playing at ease and seem to do what they please, and apart from a interception here and there and 2-3 passes strung together by Hamilton.

86th minute…… Matando hits the side of the post

89th minute….. Lyx cross tipped over the bar, corner kick. The Lynx could have gone up 4-0 to finish the game but the newcomer Henry P. was called offside after his header went inside the net.

45th minute….. Lynx shot blocked

Final Whistle.

Overall a good shot by the boys, who gave us a round of applause for being there and caring. We hung up 3 flags and were present. We talked to Busby and Wyn after the game. Those interviews are available on our site along with other videos clips from this game as well as pictures.

Hamilton 0 : Toronto Lynx 3

steelers

With both teams experiencing a lull in their respective schedules, the CPSL-leading Hamilton Thunder hosted USL-D1-wooden spooners Toronto Lynx in exhibition action at the seemingly cavernous Ivor Wynne Stadium. Toronto were trying out a few new acquisitions in lieu of their Sunday afternoon tilt against Charleston, and Hamiton were trying to shake off the nearly 2-week layoff with a game against Oakville looming on Thursday. Though it was joked that this game would be a play-off and the winner would play in the USL for the remainder of the season, the score line indicates the home side didn't fare well as Toronto were the better side (somehow).

Almost from the opening whistle, Hamilton came out guns-a-blazin', almost opening the account at the first minute when an Ashley McMillan shot just went over the bar. For the duration of the first half, the game was dominated by Hamilton, often putting Toronto on the backfoot, with little by way of response. A few of the lads from U-Sector showed up and had made mention that the Lynx were improving and were due for 3 points soon. I wasn't too convinced until a counter attack left Ferarri to fend for himself on a two man break, slotting home the goal for a 1-0 lead.

Second half started much like the first. Hamilton control, Toronto working the counter attack. Toronto bagged their second of the match when a poor header attempt back to the keeper allowed the Lynx to chip in the second. At this point Hamilton were clearly frustrated as Toronto wrested control of the tempo. Between squandered passes and two-on-one defensive coverage, the Lynx were starting to dominate the game. Sadly, when the Thunder had control of the ball in the final third of the pitch, often there was no attempt at a finishing ball. Toronto sealed the match with a chip that had Ferarri diving to his low left as the ball went high right. 3-0 to the visitors.

Att: 50-or-so

Goals: a bunch of Toronto ones, couldn't be bothered to remember who though...

Cards: nil

Thumbs up: O'Connell fared well playing left-back for the first half. Kitazawa looked threatening a few times, but was absent in the second. Bennett was a terror making some solid runs and attacking plays. The refs were very solid. Lynx technical director and TSN World Cup personality Dick Howard was in attendance.

Thumbs down: pretty much the whole second half. The style of game that normally plagues Hamilton in the first half of games in the CPSL was playing in the second. Lynx owner and (enter bad names here) Bruno Hartrell was in attendance.

Extra credit:

There was no admission charge to get in, as it turned out. The front gates were closed, but you could get in from Balsam and the Beechwood/Melrose corner gates. Someone was booing the Lynx after each goal... that could have been anyone. Hamilton was playing with a small squad and alot of the players weren't wearing their usual numbers so I lost track of alot of the new faces. The Lynx had enough for two squads.

... I honestly think we can pick up 6 pts in the next 2 games.

Are the Lynx taking on the Lady Lynx in a double header then?

Lynx Devours The Storm

by Jason Kmet, a-league.com Match Reporter

30.Jul.2002

What a difference a couple of days can make. On Sunday, the Calgary Storm easily played their best match of the season in their victory over Indiana. On Tuesday, they certainly played their worst match in their tough first year in the A-League. The Toronto Lynx came to town and showed no mercy on the young Calgary side, demolishing them 6-0.

Toronto opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Shawn Faria was open at the penalty spot. He received a cross from the right side and put the header past Alan Flanagan.

Calgary had a decent chance in the 17th minute when Jordan Gillespie crossed the ball into the box, but Conrad Chala could not convert.

In the 24th minute, the Lynx increased their lead when Niki Budelic launched a hard shot that Flanagan got his fingers on, but couldn’t stop it from rolling past the goal line.

Chala had another chance for the Storm in the 33rd minute when Nicholas Zuniga’s pass from the left side came to him. His header went straight to Lynx keeper Theo Zagar.

Toronto continued to press and in the 37th minute, Elvis Thomas blew past Storm defender Angelo Sestito along the right sideline to the corner. From there, Thomas moved along the goal line and passed to an unmarked Budelic who easily knocked it past Flanagan.

The domination of the Lynx continued. In the 42nd minute, Thomas received the ball from a throw in. He went past Storm defender Liam DeSilva and got the ball to Robbie Aristodemo, who nailed the shot from ten yards out, leaving the score at the half Toronto 4 Calgary 0.

Perhaps the most brilliant individual effort of the night occurred in the 52nd minute when Thomas headed the ball over a Calgary defender then took a shot from the right side that went just inside the left post.

Calgary had a chance to break the shutout in the 63rd minute when Kurt Bosch broke towards the net forcing Joe Mattacchione to foul him in the box. Jamie Auvigne took the penalty kick, but his mid-level shot to the right side was knocked away by Theo Zagar.

The final goal of the match was scored in the 69th minute by Adrian Serioux when he chipped the ball over a falling Flanagan and into the net.

The unopposed Lynx had one more chance in the 73rd minute when Thomas put a quality ball through to Budelic in the box, but he missed the ball. It was a minor error in a masterful performance by the Toronto side. The final score was Toronto 6 Calgary 0

This loss puts the Storm out of contention for the Voyageurs Cup. The Lynx are in first place in the Voyageurs Cup table at present.

Calgary’s next match is on Friday at Foothills Park when the Cincinnati Riverhawks visit at 6:30pm.

Lineups:

Calgary: Flanagan, Dugas, Sestito, DeSilva, Pesznecker (Ledgerwood 46), Gillespie, Auvigne, Zuniga (Kamdem 46), Chala (Wheeldon 46), Bosch, Bachelu

Toronto: Zagar (Kryger 70), Faria, Kojic (Rosenfeld 59), Mattacchione, Vincello, Diplacido, Serioux, Vignjevic (Ashton 54), Aristodemo (Penalillo 59), Budalic (Plachy 62), Thomas

Goals:

Toronto: Faria (8th), Budalic (24th and 37th), Aristodemo (42nd), Thomas (52nd), Serioux (69th)

Cautions:

Calgary: Wheeldon (47th)

Attendance: 1012

Weather: sunny with a few occasional raindrops, 18 C at kickoff, 14 C by final

STORM WARNINGS: The Storm are still missing Waldo Dutra and Chris Lemire (Canada U20), Damir Jesic (suspended), Mike Pavicic (injured) and Mark McKenna (injured). Jesic should be back for the club#146;s next game on Friday...Nik Ledgerwood has returned to the fold after leading the Alberta U17 all-stars to victory at the Canadian national championships in Newfoundland. Another member of the all-stars was Ryan Gyaki, who played for the PDL this season and sat on the bench tonight...Two more newcomers to the roster include 23-year-old Tommy Wheeldon Jr., the son of the Storm#146;s head coach. His last club was Weston-super Mare, a semi-professional club in England. Goalkeeper Allan Flanagan is a 21-year old native of Ireland who most recently played for Kingstonian, an English semi-pro club.

As yes, I remember that Irish bowling ball of a keeper we gave a trial to for that one match (and sent him packing immediately following it). He was the worst stopper I've ever seen and cost us many a goal that night.

Well, if we are really going to take a trip down memory lane...

Calgary Storm (PDL) 3 - 2 Toronto Lynx

Storm Defeat Yet Another A-League Opponent

The Calgary Storm were able to shake off some of the rust and sent another professional team away

shaking their heads tonight. This makes Calgary’s record versus A-League opponents 2-0.

It looked dire for the amateur squad, just three minutes in, when Toronto’s Brian Ashton found himself with time to shoot after latching on to a massive throw in by Adrian Serioux. Ashton’s cannon from 30 yards out picked the top right corner and Storm keeper, John Hawreliak, never had a chance.

Hawreliak was called upon just four minutes later to block a Mason Caswain shot from close range after he intercepted a horrendous back pass attempt by Liam De Silva.

Yet, Calgary was not going to let the pros have all of the action. In the 10th minute, Felix Napuri just failed to connect with an inswinging cross from the left and the ball rolled through the box. But, seconds later, Napuri would not be denied when he got his head on a beautiful cross from Storm newcomer Peter Heidler. His deflection beat TO keeper Yuri Elkaim and the game was on.

Napuri had the fans on their feet in the 23rd minute, all for naught. He had hit the side netting after some foolish moves by the Lynx. Steffen Holdt had his defender pinned by his left corner flag, and the defender tried to get cute with some fancy juggling before finally hoofing a dangerous high ball back into his own box.

In the 34th minute, Toronto striker Waldo Sponton latched onto a fine pass by Caswain and managed to slip the ball past Hawreliak.

Calgary struck back just 6 minutes later when Napuri found himself all alone to head a fine cross in from only 5 yards out.

Calgary came on strong after the restart and came close in the 52nd minute when a Napuri shot was blocked and Holdt’s shot off of the rebound missed wide right.

The Storm took the lead for good in the 65th minute when Calgary substitute Nicolas Zuniga was hauled down in the box. Holdt calmly stepped up and thundered a ball in to the top left corner.

Calgary had one last opportunity to add salt to Toronto’s wounds when Damir Jesic was sent free on a break, but Lynx substitute keeper, Theo Zagar, managed to close the door in time.

All-in-all, a fine performace was demonstrated by a Calgary team that was missing a number of regulars.

New faces like Waldemar Dutra and Peter Heidler looked impressive and the regulars looked nice and solid. My man of the match goes to Felix Napuri who must have run for 100 km tonight and was a thorn in the side of the Lynx defence for his 80 minutes of play.

Bring on the Whitecaps!

Calgary:

Hawreliak, Pavicic, De Silva, Chala, Dutra (Paszkowski 45), Heidler, Auvigne, Jesic (Zuniga 45), Slade (Ledgerwood), Holdt, Napuri (Jesic again 80)

Toronto: (they subbed on and off so many times, I'm only going to say who saw playing time)

Elkain (Zagar 45), Reda, Mattacchione, Serioux, Hooper, Ashton, Vinecello, Gomez, Benjamin, Mason, Sponton, DiPlacido, Aristedemo, Ryta?

It's true. I'm biased and I admit it. Hamilton is the greatest side in the land, and I can't help it.
