Winnipeg Fury
Guatemala's World Cup tuneup with Iran canceled April 20, 2004 GUATEMALA CITY (AP) -- Guatemalan soccer officials said Tuesday the national team's exhibition against Iran next month was scrapped because the United States didn't give visas to the Iranians. The match was scheduled for May 1 in Washingon, D.C. But Jorge Roldan, director of the Guatemala selectors, said the U.S. government failed to grant the visas. Coach Ramon Maradiaga called the news ``an obstacle that is going to slow the work we had planned.'' Guatemala's first CONCACAF World Cup qualifying match will be in Suriname in June. Winnipeg Fury
Guatemala: Iranian soccer players didn't apply for U.S. visas April 21, 2004 GUATEMALA CITY (AP) -- The Iranian national soccer team didn't receive visas for an exhibition against Guatemala in the United States, causing cancellation of the match, a Guatemalan official said Wednesday. Rafael Salguero, interim president of the national soccer federation, said the Iranians didn't apply in time for visas and couldn't travel to the United States for the game May 1 in Washington. On Tuesday, Jorge Roldan, director of the Guatemala selectors, accused the U.S. government of denying visas to the Iranians. Kelly Shannon, a spokeswoman for the State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs, said Wednesday that the Iranian team never applied for the visas, but she wasn't sure why. She said the U.S. government had agreed to help expedite their requests. When asked why the Iranians didn't apply, Roldan said they missed the deadline. The Iranian team also was scheduled to play the Los Angeles Galaxy on April 28 in Pasadena, Calif. But the Galaxy said Monday that the game also had been canceled. beachesl
Like the Nigerian women's team who were supposed to play our WNT and others in North Carolina last spring. They also failed to apply in time, but they didn't try to pin blame on the US.

DJT
Just a note that, as of May 17, "the suspension of the Guatemalan football association was also officially lifted. The executive had provisionally lifted the suspension during its meeting in London in February 2004" (from FIFA).
