Lars Hirschfeld earned a shutout in 'Spurs reserves 2 - 0 victory over Portsmouth reserves

Reserve report

27 Jan 2004 17:41

Christian Ziege completed the full 90 minutes as our reserves beat Portsmouth 2-0 on Monday night.

Playing left-back, the German star breezed through the game in terms of fitness and declared himself ready for selection again afterwards.

The game was wrapped up in a fine first half display with early goals from Bobby Zamora and Mark Yeates.

But it was a night of mixed fortunes for the young Irish midfielder. Inventive and lively in the first half, he was sent off for two bookable offences after the break - the first for tugging at a shirt, the second, five minutes from time, for jumping into a tackle in his attempt to block a clearance.

Most present appeared to consider the decision somewhat harsh and it was a disappointing end to a night that started so brightly.

It took just two minutes to open the scoring. Lee Barnard was brought down in the box and Zamora made no mistake from the spot.

From there it was all Spurs, arguably the best 45 minutes seen from the reserves this season.

Barnard forced Chris Tardif into a decent save to his left but the Pompey keeper was helpless as we made it 2-0 after 17 minutes.

It was a peach of a strike as Yeates cut in from the right and curled left-footed into the top right corner from 25 yards.

Tardif was alost caught out by Ziege's cross and struggled to hold onto a Rohan Ricketts drive and a Barnard header as we dominated.

Pompey barely had a sniff of goal but carved out a decent chance two minutes before the break as Warren Hunt lobbed the ball to Chris Clark but he could only shoot straight at Lars Hirschfeld.

The second half didn't quite reach the same heights but chances were still created.

Tardif did well to divert a dipping effort from Barnard and even better to block point-blank when Ziege picked out Zamora in the box.

Hunt curled Pompey's best effort of the second half just wide but play was soon back up the other end, Tardif again doing well to tip aside Jon Blondel's drive.

Blondel had the final chance, somehow clearing the bar from Phil Ifil's pinpont cross.

Other highlights of our fifth successive win in the FA Premier Reserve League included another faultless display from Ifil at right-back and Kelly, with pace to burn, in charge at the back.
