sstackho
I'm looking forward to the matches tomorrow morning, so thought I'd start a thread where we can discuss the other matches going on, and update the provisional standings as the goals go in. For games that haven't yet occured, the standings reflect a 0-0 draw. I'll update this chart as the games progress: If current results stand: Group A 8:45am 0 United Arab Emirates EST Th 0 Burkina Faso 11:30am 0 Slovakia EST Th 0 Panama Group B 8:45am 0 Argentina EST Th 0 Mali 11:30am 0 Spain EST Th 0 Uzbekistan Group C 8:45am 0 Brazil EST Th 0 Australia 11:30am 0 Canada EST Th 0 Czech Republic Group D 8:45am 0 Colombia EST Fr 0 England 11:30am 0 Egypt EST Fr 0 Japan Group E 8:45am 0 Saudi Arabia EST Fr 0 Côte d'Ivoire 11:30am 0 Ireland Republic EST Fr 0 Mexico Group F 8:45am 0 Korea Republic EST Fr 0 United States 11:30am 0 Germany EST Fr 0 Paraguay Round of 16 would be: Burkina Faso Japan United States Spain Côte d'Ivoire Egypt Brazil United Arab Emirates Colombia Mali Australia Slovakia Korea Republic Ireland Republic Argentina Germany
sstackho
Early matches have started. I'm wondering why they wouldn't play group matches at the same time, as is traditionally done at the World Cup in order to avoid match-fixing? More difficult with 6 groups, I suppose... sstackho
18' in (according to the notoriously mistimed LiveScore) and no goals. Canada wants goals by Burkina Faso and Argentina to help their cause. But both of those teams are in the next round, so do they have any incentive? Then again, they're teenagers - they rarely need incentive in sports. I'm off to work. Back in 20 minutes.

sstackho
Now 3-0 for Argentina, and Australia are up 2-0 against Brazil! The Argy goals are good for us and the Czechs. Right now, a 1-0 Canada win would sneak us in to the next round. If current results stand: Group A 38' 0 United Arab Emirates 0 Burkina Faso 11:30am 0 Slovakia EST Th 0 Panama Group B 38' 3 Argentina 0 Mali 11:30am 0 Spain EST Th 0 Uzbekistan Group C 38' 0 Brazil 2 Australia 11:30am 0 Canada EST Th 0 Czech Republic Group D 8:45am 0 Colombia EST Fr 0 England 11:30am 0 Egypt EST Fr 0 Japan Group E 8:45am 0 Saudi Arabia EST Fr 0 Côte d'Ivoire 11:30am 0 Ireland Republic EST Fr 0 Mexico Group F 8:45am 0 Korea Republic EST Fr 0 United States 11:30am 0 Germany EST Fr 0 Paraguay Round of 16 would be: Burkina Faso Czech Republic United States Spain Côte d'Ivoire Egypt Australia Japan Colombia United Arab Emirates Brazil Slovakia Korea Republic Ireland Republic Argentina Germany
sstackho
It looks like it's halftime in the early matches, with the scores unchanged from my last post. C'mon, Burkina Faso. Get a goal!! I hope they're not just being nice to the home crowd. Gian-Luca
Just to note, the Czech's only have 2 points, not 3, and I had thought that Mexico & the Saudi's only had 1 (they can't possibly have 2 points from two ties & a goal differential of minus 1). sstackho
As I said above, the provisional tables are assuming 0-0 draws for matches that haven't occurred yet. I know this can be confusing, but I wanted to see the "how we stand right now" results. Mali gets one back to make it 3-1 in the 65th minute. If they make it 3-2, then a 1-goal victory wouldn't be enough for Canada, at the moment.

I think he is updating accoring to current scores. i.e. it is 0-0 in the games not yet played. Hence Canada having one point.

sstackho
76' and Brazil gets one back in the only match that has no impact on Canada's chances of advancing. More importantly, Burkina Faso still has not scored.
sstackho
88' according to LiveScore and Brazil gets another to make it 3-2. Nothing in the Burkino Faso - UAE match to report. That is a frustrating one.
Gian-Luca
Problem is with UAE & Burkina Faso, a tie suits both teams (though UAE would be assured of going through with a win - right now they are likley to be one of the top 3rd place finishers). Good point about the matches not being held at the same time - a tie gets rid of Panama altogether.
Gordon
quote:Originally posted by sstackho More importantly, Burkina Faso still has not scored. Gian-Luca
Aussies beat Brazil 3-2, Argentina beats Mali 3-1. So there you go Canada, anything is possible. Beat the Czechs.
sstackho
Good points all. I have memories of the end of Mexico-Italy from WC2002 dancing in my head. grrrrr.... But wait, LiveScore is showing 90', but not FT for the match. The FIFA match tracker was just at 48', and now moved to 50'. LiveScore now shows no time at all. Was there a delay?? sstackho
The FIFA match tracker keeps ticking along. Now in the 58th minute. I am assuming there was a delay. Still no goals. I remember previously someone checking a Dubai radio or TV internet feed for earlier matches. Does anyone want to look for this match online? Guest Jeffery S.
So to sum up. If we beat the Czechs by any result and neither Mexico nor Saudi Arabia do better than draw tomorrow, we are through. And would play Burkina Faso. But even if we win this and if either SA or Mexico win their respective matches, we are out. That right?
sstackho
Yes, except that an Uzbek win over Spain (by the same margin as a Canada win) would bump us out.
