Canada Defeats Mexico 4-0

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team defeated Mexico 4-0 on Thursday in an international friendly in Guasave, Mexico to earn their third straight shutout win.

After a scoreless first half, Christine Sinclair opened the scoring in the 58th minute bringing her international goal total to 37. Sinclair is currently Canada’s third top goal scorer behind Charmaine Hooper with 56 goals and Silvana Burtini with 38 goals.

Christine Latham increased Canada’s lead to two in the 74th minute before a Mexico own goal minutes later in the 80th minute. Canada’s fourth goal was scored by Amber Allen in the 90th minute.

“Our team only played an average first half,” said head coach Even Pellerud. “With Christine Sinclair playing as a high midfielder behind Hooper, Latham, and Lang, we were not able to win enough balls in the middle. Higher midfield intensity and better execution in the second half allowed us to create a number of opportunities.”

Karina LeBlanc earned her 10th international shutout for Canada. Canada is undefeated in three games with a goal total of 12-0.

“It’s satisfying that we now have three games in a row without conceding a goal. With a total of 10-3 in goal chances, we certainly deserved the win. That said, the win was too big and we need a new focus on Sunday to get a good result. That game will be played without three Pro (WUSA) players as they have to report back to their clubs,” concluded Pellerud.

Canada will play Mexico again on Sunday, June 14th.

Except for a couple of posters, no one else seems interested in our women's team. The future of soccer in our country is in the hands of the women. I find much more rewarding what the women continue to accomplish over what us men continue to falter on.

Canada Defeats Mexico 2-1

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team defeated Mexico 2-1 in front of 2,123 on Sunday in an international friendly in Mazatlan, Mexico while preparing for the 2003 Women’s World Cup.

Mexico opened the scoring in the seventh minute and kept the lead until the 54th minute when Christine Sinclair tied the game. Sinclair has now tied Silvana Burtini as Canada’s second highest goal scorer with a total of 38 goals with the Women’s World Cup team.

Oakville, Ontario native Diana Matheson scored the game winner and her first international goal in the 90th minute.

“We won the game more because of a strong desire than a great performance,” said head coach Even Pellerud. “Disastrous playing conditions made great play impossible, but we compensated by a better fitness level and some great individual performances. Diana Matheson was one good example; she earned the match winner when she was pushed higher in the last part of the game.”

Canada’s next series is against Brazil on Thursday, July 17 at Molson Stadium in Montreal and Sunday, July 20th at Frank Clair Stadium in Ottawa.
