Serie A 2015-16

I've started following the league a lot more closely since I took more of an interest in Fiorentina, and really enjoyed the play last season. Yes, Juventus ran away with things, but the fight for third and the last Champions League spot was insane and there were some nice runs by teams in the Europa League. I don't think the league has been as lopsided in past years as people are saying. Rioma had a 10 match winning streak to start the season 2 years ago and Napoli has been there or there abouts as well. The problem is that the 2 Milan teams are both in doldrums, which takes away 2 of teh traditional contenders, but has allowed 'smaller' teams to step to the forefront. The increased investment at both of the Milan squads does make for an interesting season.

Here is a nice preview from Paolo Bandini:

Nice article on where Serie A stands at the international break and what to expect for the rest of the season.

It has been a great first 12 rounds. The fact that my Fiorentina is on top of the table certainly helps. I never would have expected this. Look at the players that they lost in the offseason; Salah, Gomez, Pizarro, Vargas, Aquilani, Savic, Gilardino, Diamanti, Basanta, Kurtic. To be replaced by Kalinic, Vecino, Roncaglia, Astori, Blaszczykowski, Gilberto, Suarez and Verdu.

What a game yesterday between Napoli and Inter!! So nice to see the Stadio San Paolo full again. The way Napoli are playing now, they are favorites to win only their 3rd title.

Sad to see my Fiorentina drop points for the second week in a row. Their lack of depth is really hurting them. I want to see them progress and do well in the Europa League, primarily to help the Italian coefficient, but I know that will continue to have a negative impact on their league form.

Roma is going down hill for almost a month now. Squeezing by in champions league with i think the lowest point total ever to pass, knocked out of coppa italia by 2nd division team and 4 games in a row in season without win I think. It is nice to see a bunch of teams fighting at the top but looks like its only a matter of time before Juve regains 1st place. Hoping Inter Juve Roma Napoli and Juve will all be in the fight still come march or april

This is almost par for the course with Roma now and really makes me question Rudi Garcia. He trots out virtually the same line up and formation every single week. It is not working. At the beginning of the season they were catching teams off guard with a devastating counter attack of Gervinho and Salah. They aren't getting those opportunities anymore and just can't break anybody down. I feel bad for them in a way because their American owners have invested lots of money (some of it not wisely) and are trying to build a real project, which is so rare to see in Italy. I would like to see that rewarded, especially for when they move into their new stadium, so other owners follow suit.

and ya i have been watching empoli, they have been on a roll with maccarone looking like his best old self. Sassuolo has a game in hand on all the 6 times above them so a win in the makeup game would put them alone in 6th. What is nice about Sassuolo is that they play pretty much all Italian players. They have kept that mentality since entering serie a a couple years back. It just goes to show you that teams can do well with low budgets and local players with the right system, coach and project. I hope they can make stay at top of the table

Love the Serie A tradition of ending the Christmas break with a full round of games on the Epiphany (which is a holiday in Italy). And a compelling round of games it was.

Right back at it with Round 19 and the halfway point of the season this weekend.

Napoli are leaders at the halfway point. Juventus win their 9th in a row. Fiorentina fall out of the top 3 for the first time this season.

Also, great story from Carpi:
" Lorenzo Pasciuti scored his first goal of the season for Carpi and in the process became the first player in Italian football history to score for the same team in all of the country’s top five divisions."

Wow. I heard about that. Cool story. Roma blew it again against Milan. Garcia will probably be fired this week it seems but who knows. Lots of voices swirling around. Last time serie a was this close at the top was the year Sampdoria won about 25 years ago.

The game of the season is Saturday at 11:45am PST - Juventus v Napoli. 2nd hosting 1st with only 2 points separating them. Juventus on a 14 match winning streak. Napoli on an 8 match winning streak. Both are club records. If you are going to watch one Serie A game this season, make it this one.

Number 3 in the table also plays number 4 as Fiorentina host Inter on Sunday.

Not the right year, but I wasn't too sure where to put it...2016-17 Serie A roundup.
https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2017/jun/08/the-bandinis-2017-utterly-exhaustive-review-of-serie-a-season

Despite no race at the top, really enjoyed the play on the field in Serie A this season. The defensive stereotypes have well and truly been smashed; quite dramatically for a handful of teams.

I'll try to keep a thread going for the 2017-18 season. We'll see if the new owners in the league can help close the gap at the top.
