A Tribute to English Football

" Futsal is not even played in the country. Every modern Brazilian star started with futsal before going on to a youth program.

In Spain futsal is also prevalent and perhaps it is no coincidence that Spain is the current European champs.."

Ouch, ouch, ouch. That is so close to home and I mean Canada not England.

^ Believe it or not Futsal has been around southern Ontario for a long time, specially within the latino community in Toronto. I also know that the SAAC Academies teach Futsal during the winter months and the OSA has The Ontario Futsal Cup http://www.thesoccerhalloffame.ca/OSN.nsf/64c0faafd9ba4410852570ba00564402/08b23c5ab5872ba085257098006dca80?OpenDocument

also Canada did participate and big Futsal competitions around the world and there are many Futsal organizations in Ontario, here are some of the links for your info:

so yes, we do play Futsal in Canada but you would have to go out of Calgary to notice.

Yes I have read other stories about Futsal in Ontario and I envy you. I am trying to get something going in Calgary at the school level because Calgary Minor Soccer isn't interested. If I can get something started in the schools then maybe it can grow from there. Got to start somewhere. Wish me luck (thanks for the links).

Guest Jeffery S.

To give you an idea of how extensive the game is, my son plays school futsal in Barcelona. Just in his age group, grade three and four, there are 120 teams (mostly schools, with the odd sports club in there) in 20 divisions. That would be an average of 10 kids per team, so maybe 1200 playing futsal at age 8-10.

They play FIFA rules, almost exactly, except for some minor alterations, and it is competitive, with a first phase, top teams going to a second phase (like in Scotland, Switzerland), and then playoff eliminations to a final winner.

And the website is absolutely thorough, every result of every game and stats posted a few days after each weekend fixture.

The idea here is that if you really want to play the game, you should move on to a larger field by age 12 or so.

So much for the north American view that youngsters should not play to win and that results shouldn't matter. I have never subscribed to that myself. It's a competitive game and you play to win from the very first time you set foot on the field of play. Evrything you do thereafter has one objective... winning the game.

^ That is the best statement I've seen in this board in a long time.

North american soccer is a far cry from the real sport around the world and some of the people who run clubs and leagues here and in the US, have no clue whatsoever about the structure of the sport.

After all this is north america the land where dreams come true.... specially for people involved in soccer.

Yeah I think that gets thrown around a little too much around here.

The context in which i'd agree with it would be not adapting tactics that are successful on a low level but not at later ages. Futsal is great for that reason, because the skills are so transferable and magnified in nature.
