Alberto7
from SLAM Soccer on Canoe.ca Major Indoor Soccer League shuts down By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WESTPORT, Conn. - The Major Indoor Soccer League has shut down after seven seasons and is considering restructuring. The league, which had been in operation since the 2001-'02 season and had nine teams in the 2007-'08 season, ceased operation last weekend. That came a few days after commissioner Steve Ryan resigned. Former league chairman John Hantz, owner of the Detroit Ignition, said Monday the league is considering restructuring that would allow long-term growth and expansion. In addition to Detroit, the league had teams this season in Baltimore, Chicago, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Newark, N.J., Orlando, Fla., Stockton, Calif., and Monterrey, Mexico. Anyone really care if this league comes back? Players who play both indoor and outdoor have a lot of injuries and are never available in time to their outdoor teams. Its dumb but if you started a north American Pro Futsal league you would do well... Team size small, facilitys easily available i.e. majour gynasiums, A Canadian League could function with teams in any city having gym of about 1500 or more ... lets see twelve players on contract at say a base of 25k with highest salary at 50K team salary budget all in with coaches etc. under 500k. Play 50 games with minimum potential seat sales of 50X 1,500 - 75,000 tickets at ten bucks each...( movie price )with sponsors and ancillarys probably losses of 100k a year. League start in October finishing in May two games per week. You could do teams in Quebec City, Sherbrooke, Montreal ( say 3 )and Gatineau, Ottawa ( two teams ) Cornwall, Kingston, Toronto ( 1 ) etc.. any city with 50k population could field a team... go to divisions in second year based on promotion and relegation. Would be interesting project for CSA or the Quebec and Ontario Associations to bring about.
Soju
I think that's a great idea. Futsal is a lot of fun to play and exciting to watch. It's a good solution to Canadian winters and its benefits to player development are well documented.
amacpher
Can you even call MISL futsal? 3-point shots, endless timeouts, power-plays.... ugh! Good riddence!
Massive Attack
Futsal will be just as hard a sell as indoor.
Soju
I hate the MISL rules they're ridiculous it's definitely not Futsal. In my dreams Futsal would be marketable in Canada but MA is probably right.

I certainly did not call MISL futsal, my comment was if you restarted a league make it a futsal league, in Brasil its a pretty big sport and draws well at the university and pro level. Canada recently played in tournament here... with Angola Brasil and bunch of others on TV every day ... and timed to end just before Euro s started. Seriously Canada and the states should look at Futsal as viable project that enhances the chances for better development of players.
Soju
^Truth. Our youth should be playing futsal in the winter and honing their technical skills. It's the soccer solution to long winters.
