Stadium in Vancouver

With all the stadium troubles in Toronto (on again, off again) why wouldn't the CSA look to build a stadium in Vancouver? Whitecaps owner Greg Kerfoot wants to build a downtown, soccer specific stadium and according to Lenarduzzi it sounds like the team will build a temporary facility for the WYC in 2007.

Why wouldn't the CSA just team up with Kerfoot and the Whitecaps to build a venue in Vancouver that could be the home for the national team? Unlike Ontario, you can play soccer here 12 months a year.

Am I crazy or is this just too logical?

There's been lots of hype about the Caps buiding a stadium in downtown Vancouver and a training facility in Richmond. The talk may be nothing more than hot air. Kerfoot has already done a lot by building a field at SFU and he plans to also have a training room, change rooms and a few offices. That cost him several million.

A stadium in downtown will cost up to $100 million. Land in downtown is very expensive, and construction costs have skyrocketed. The Caps can't afford it. They haven't even sold out tomorrow's home opener. They say they have 1,000 tix left for tomorrow. A new stadium in downtown Vancouver makes no sense.

A new stadium in Vancouver is how you get those tickets sold

There is nothing wrong with Swangard, except it has a track around it. The location is good for fans. and there is free parking at the Telus building across the street. There won't be free parking downtown.

The skytrain also goes by Swangard, so people without cars can take skytrain.

A downtown stadium will be more convenient for some people but it won't draw enough fans to make it financially feasible. As an example, BC Place Stadium is downtown and the Lions can't fill it for their 8 home games. The Lions are lucky to half fill BC Place.

B.C. Place has over 60,000 seats. What team could possibly fill that - besides the Whitecaps back in ther early 80's!?! You haven't forgotten the Sky Train stop "stadium"? -as well as bus access on three sides (Cambie, Hastings, Main), and soon a street car wrapping around from Stanley Park to Cordova via Science World. Guaranteed a stadium there will draw more fans than Swanguard. That's the whole idea behind building it.
