I assume you Canucks have heard of

Yeah I tease GL, but that was a pretty good mix of music for the trip. I like Zappa (but I love the Mothers) and I like Beefheart. I hadn't actually heard Hot Rats, so I enjoyed listening to it. I think Zappa is good driving music actually varied, occassionally very humourous.

Vancouver Fan> Matt Good sucks. I'm going to try to guess your taste a little and suggest The Dears, The Stills and The New Pornographers. If you liked the Smiths at all, you should like the Organ. You may also like Manitoba, Broken Social Scene, Stars and I canÕt stop listening to the latest Deadly Snakes record. I thought ÔInto Your HideoutÕ by Pilate was a great song, but I didnÕt dig the album much. WinnipegÕs Projektor. For an Elephant6 vibe, I like The Heavy Blinkers.

I wrote that before Massive Attack's good reply. K-OS is great and so is Hot Hot Heat, but I'm not sure they'd be something yr into. I mean I could go on and on (Metric, Godspeed You Black Emperor, DoMakeSayThink, Controller.Controller, The Hidden Cameras, the Unicorns, the Constantines, the Salteens and of course Despistado) nevermind decent mainstream acts like Matt Mays, Sam Roberts, Cheerleader, Sarah Harmer, The Be Good Tanyas, Ron Sexsmith, etc, etc

cheers,

matthew

Hey Champ, did you see Alice Donut when they had Ultra Bide with them? Now those kids were insane and great. I have no idea what happened to them, but they were one of the best live bands I've ever seen.

The New Bomb Turks were great, totally antogonized the audience all night and closed with This Place Sucks by the Queers. And hey if you partied with the Jesus Lizard, there's nothing more to say. Very cool.

As a total aside, K-OS is from Whitby? Bizarre.

cheers,

matthew

Gasp... double gasp... ****ing hella gasp.

When Alice Donut played with Ultra Bide, Nomeansno headlined.(?!) That gave me a chance to smoke joints with half of Alice Donut and Ultra Bide. The best triple bill I ever saw, ever. I've got the pictures and the Ultra Bide CD if you wanna copy. Alice Donut are back together!!!!

I accidentally got kicked out of New Bomb Turks for assaulting them the last (3rd) time but the lead singer asked me to. They are just so geeky that they antagonize you just by being there. But it was probably the last show I'll see so I really let it go. I bought 100 drinks for the house, paid with a check and went home.

Met David Yow by accident on acid when I stole his table at the Republik. Met his folks. That show was so good some guy in front of me just up and lit on fire. Saw 'em 3 more times.

For the Alberta Pride factor I'll add..

Grampa's Magick Pinecone

Ramada Gods

The ****ing Snakes

Watersports

Mistrels on Speed

the loved one

Matthew... which games are you going to? Let's talk music.

By any chance, was it at Lollapalooza '95 (I think) that you met the Bosstones and Jesus Lizzard? I was there and I know they played that bill together.

Also, is Neurosis the band that went on to form Isis?

No Dude, I never went to no lallapoluzzala. Althought I went to 'Highwood', 'Highwood '93' and 'Infest' I saw most of those bands in 200 person venues. Bosstones, unfortunatelly at Race City for skater fest.

Neurosis was in the Republik. I stood in front of them, poked them and got spit on in a bar with 50 people. They were ... ... can't describe how good... sooooo good... and I have the permanent hearing loss to prove it. I think you are right about Isis.

Jesus Lizard was all in the Republik except one in Edmonton. Always terrifying.

I'll be in Edmonton. I'm pretty sure I'll be at the Costa Rica match in Vancouver. No positive yet.

Yeah I'd love a copy of that Ultra Bide CD. I got a copy of a four song ep casette from them. They were neaarly impossible to talk to part because of the language barrier and part because they were so mental.

That was the same tour I saw. I actually wasn't that into Alice Donut. I respected what they were doing, but they didn't blow me away. I mean they had a tough act to follow and nomeansno is always great (though seeing nomeansno in a small hall with dead animal heads on the wall in Moose Jaw, Sask was pretty cool).

I'm not sure how much our tastes will overlap, but it's always good to talk music with people who are passionate about it and I saw a hell of a lot of shows in the late 90s.

cheers,

matthew

One Ultra Bide CD burned.

I love lotsa of varied kinds of music, but the number one factor has to be intergrity. Although I almost conserted to only listening to Macho '70's pop once (Neil Diamond, Tom Jones)

My problem is that I mostly like live music and all clubs here have closed or coverted to 'DJs' andall of the bands I like aren't around anymore.

Alice Donut are that really ugly urban New York style ('oh wakka baby, I'm havin a good time, yah') like Bomb so I can see how a lot of people don't get them. Did they play Ring of Fire with the trombone solo?

See ya in the 'chuk.
