Desigol
The Darkness? They're the new UK band to be Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge in America. I personaly hate them, mainly because they play 'Dadrock' (i.e. music your Parents would listen to).
Massive Attack
I don't like them either. Is it really necessary to wear a unitard?

devioustrevor
I've heard of them, but I don't really like them. I myself think they missed their era by about 20-25 years.
Marc
Nah, that's the plan - the 'blast from the past' schtick. Hopefully it won't last long. Outside of 'I believe' they're pretty boring.

Former Champ
they play '80's hair metal, and pretty poorly at that, but for some reason i like them. too many pop stars take themselves waaaaay too seriously, I think these guys are the counter to that. matthew
Actually I think The Darkness' popularity has already peaked on both sides of the Atlantic. I hated hair metal when I was a kid the first time around. Sure it's knowing and campy, but it's still that ball-squeezing falsetto brand of hair metal that I never liked in the first place. Speaking of metal, any Apocalyptica fans? cheers, matthew
Vancouver Fan
The Darkness was the flavor of the month earlier this year. There really isn't anything original about them.Like most music out there today it's mostly about the packaging and not so much of the music. IMO the only bands worth listening to these last few years are Gomez,Strokes,Radiohead,Beta Band,Coldplay,Oasis.Chemical Bros,Primal Scream,Eels,Beck,Dandy Warhols,Badly Drawn Boy,White Stripes, and maybe a couple of others. Gian-Luca
Along with Radiohead, don't forget Sigur Ros, The Tangent, Ayreon, Karnataka, Mostly Autumn, The Flower Kings, The Mars Volta, Parallel or 90 Degrees and Porcupine Tree as great contemporary bands. GL> you mean we could have been listening to the Mars Volta on the way to Kingston? I'm confused though, their songs aren't all 10 minutes long. Turbonegro are a great band and any friends of St. Pauli are friends of mine, but I don't think that makes all of those other bands 'crap'. cheers, matthew

The Mars Volta haven't struck me as playing "summertime" music so it never occured to me to bring it. Maybe next time! They are the only band that I've ever had to journey to the Punk section of a music store to find, which was strange as I first heard about them when reading a critics' "Top 10 Progressive Rock Albums of 2003" article. I figured any band that plays prog and was formed at a Doctor Who convention (or so the legend goes) was worth venturing into the Punk area to check out. Oh by the way, I neglected to mention Hamadryad in my original post, great new band out of Montreal. Guess what kind of music they play...... DJT
quote:Originally posted by Gian-Luca Hey, and I brought Hot Rats specifically for you to hear, what with the Captain Beefhart guest vocal and all...... Now here's something in this thread I can relate to. I bet it was not well-received. It took me at least five listens to get into, but now I think it's a masterpiece. You really have to sit back and listen carefully to most Zappa music, as you would classical music, as it's not well-suited to playing in a car or any other time when you're trying to do something else. This is why he would make people sit down, be quiet and actually listen at his concerts (before they got too big).
Gian-Luca
I wouldn't bet too much - Matthew loves Captain Beefhart, so my playing it was deliberate. I love playing Zappa in the car, I think it sounds great and Hot Rats is a great album to drive to during the day (as One Size Fits All is at night). BTW I'm going to see Matthew Goode this friday. He's not bad.I friend of mine is paying for the tickets after I treated for the Gomez show a couple of weeks ago.
