The 2016 USL Season thread

Recommended Posts

USL is kicking off their season next week. 29 clubs will participate in the season. The following are some discussion points that I think will be interesting to follow over the course of the year.

- Will Whitecaps FC 2 actually follow sanctioning requirements this year, starting 6 Canadians every match?

- Do any Canadians currently signed to a USL contract sign an MLS contract before the season's end? Someone like, Uccello, Levis or Riggi perhaps?

- How do the Canadians on American USL clubs fare? Will be interesting to see how Laryea, Ewart, Pasher, Cox, Grant, and Murrell do among others. Laryea especially since I don't see him getting much action with Orlando City.

- How do our U-17 prospects fare in USL? Eyes will be on Davies, Tabla and Chung.

- Do any new Canadian wonder kids sign a USL contract before the season's end? Someone like Adonijah Reid perhaps?

- Do any of the USL clubs sign someone completely outside of their academies? Someone like Dominic Russo?

- Does Tosaint Ricketts sign in USL? I'm mostly kidding, but not 100%.

- How many arguments in this thread about winning versus development are had in this thread?

The rule doesn't say that you have to start 6 Canadians every match. It says that you have to start on average 6 Canadians every match. So if you start with 4 in a game and 8 in another, it's fine.

I'm not sure about that, where have you seen that an average of 6 is required? I've only ever seen it reported that Canadian clubs must start 6 Canadians. First mentioned here by Duane Rollins:

http://www.canadiansoccernews.com/index.php?/page/articles.html/_/24th-minute/csa-requires-strict-canadian-quotas-for-usl-pro-sanctioning-r4815

And here by AFTN:

And later referenced here by Steven Sandor

I've never seen it mentioned anywhere that they had to start an average of 6 Canadians every match.

I'm pretty sure that @Duane Rollins1555362254 tweeted something during the offseason saying that you have to start an amount of Canadians in the year that equates to 6 per game. However I'm not a sophisticated search robot sent back in time to find something that Duane wrote. But hey, he'll maybe find it somewhere.

Liked this purely for the American Pie reference.

FC Montreal lost 1-0 to Bethlehem Steel last night. Interesting that David Paulmin got the start over Crepeau, I would assume that as the Impact's third keeper, Crepeau would be getting big minutes in USL. Wonder if he is injured?

TFC II currently up 2-0 over NYRB2 at halftime. Raheem Edwards and Skylar Thomas with the goals. Edwards' goal was a tap in after a beautiful pass across the face of goal by Baouli, and Thomas' goal was a nice little flick after a great pass from Mannella (not 100% sure who fed Thomas)

Crépeau got a concussion in Tampa and that's why we haven't seen him.
