A rudimentary sketch of Canadian playing pyramids would be something like:

MEN'S

12. National Team

11. MLS

10. NASL

9. CSL

8. PDL (2 months)

7. Senior Men's - Amateur - Regional

6. University/College (2 month season)

5. Senior Men's - Amateur - Local

4. Youth Competitive - Regional

3. High School (1 month season)

2. Youth Competitive - Local

1. House League

WOMEN'S

12. National Team

11.

10.

9.

8. W League (2 months, 2 provinces only)

7. University/College (2 month season)

6. Senior Women's - Amateur - Regional

5. Senior Women's - Amateur - Local

4. Youth Competitive - Regional

3. High School (1 month season)

2. Youth Competitive - Local

1. House League

Definietly there are gaffes in that, but the point isn't to delineate or demarcate to any degree of accuracy (and please don't segue it there). It's simply to visualize that female full-season programming stops halfway up the pyramid in Canada.

Before the filling out of the men's pyramid in Canada, players left the country to play and earn a living and develop their game. This is what floated our men's national team for a long time. The problem on the women's side is you can't earn a living anywhere. It's a catch-22.

Canada has one of the highest participation rates of women and girls playing the game. We have more registered females playing the game than the entire country of Iceland (who are ranked #15 in the world).

Outside brief leagues for students, the only leagues that exist for women in Canada have been setup by regional associations and/or provincial associations. There is no national participation or presence, nor is there any inter-provincial.

If there was a Christmas wish or New Years resolution for Canadian women's soccer, people across the country working together to provide opportunities for women would be number one on the list.

OTTAWA, Ont. - With their 15th season set to kick off May 24 against the Quebec Dynamo ARSQ, Ottawa Fury FC announced its first five signings as Head Coach Dom Oliveri added five internationally-capped Canadians to his roster for the upcoming W-League campaign.

Returning to the club from last season are Shelina Zadorsky, Christabel Oduro, Bryanna McCarthy, Ashley Lawrence and Kadeisha Buchanan, who recently starred in Canada's 1-1 draw with the United States on May 8.

This year the U20 tournament starts August 5th.  In 2012 it was August 19 and players were unavailable for club after July 3.

The Ottawa schedule runs a month and a half from May 24-July 12, so if it's the same pattern that would mean a handful of games and no playoffs for the U20 players.

Yes, that's why Laval has said that they really are trying to recruit players not with the U20 because of that. Sure, they'll take them, but they know that they won't play a lot and have to find more players.
