TORONTO -- Toronto FC will play either Mexico's Cruz Azul or Panama's San Francisco if it survives the preliminary round of the CONCACAF Champions League.

Cruz Azul is a two-time runner-up in the club competition that covers North and Central America and the Caribbean.

Toronto opens the preliminary round at home against Honduras' Motagua on July 27 before playing Aug. 3 in Honduras.

CONCACAF announced Friday the schedule for the first two rounds of the group stage. Other matches will be detailed at a later date.

The eight preliminary-round winners will join eight other clubs in the 16-team group stage.

Should Toronto advance, it would play its first group stage game Aug. 17. The next game would be Aug. 24 against Panama's Arabe Unido.

TFC, meanwhile, announced the signing of Brazilian forward Maicon Santos, who was released earlier in the week by Chivas USA.

"We are delighted to welcome Maicon on board," Mo Johnston, Toronto's director of soccer, said in a statement. "(Coach) Preki knows this player inside and out, and speaks very highly of him both on and off the field. He's a target man, strong, and packs a very good shot."

Santos, 26, came to the MLS last August on loan from Brazil's Bonsucesson Futebol Clube.

He played in eight games last season, collecting a goal and an assist. He also scored a goal in the playoffs.

Prior to joining MLS, Santos also played professionally in Libya, and Israel.

Earlier this week, TFC announced the signing of Spanish forward Mista.
