Result of the Friday October 10, 2008 CSL game between Italia Shooters and Brampton Lions played at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York at 8:00pm.

This was the one-game Quarter Final between the 2nd and 7th place team.

90 minutes…no scoring.

Silver Goal Overtime with two (if necessary) 15 minute periods

114 min…Shooters Marco Terminesi GOAL…Lions goalie Kevin Doyle is out to left edge of box to challenge Shooters Jason DeThomasis who heads ball by him and Terminesi chips ball from 10 yards on left past retreating defender. Terminesi earns a Yellow card for pulling off his shirt to celebrate the goal.

123 min…game ends.

Final Score:……..Italia Shooters……..1……….Brampton Lions……..0…………

Attendance was about 100 on this cool evening with much of the crowd arriving after the 8:00pm kick off. This game was played at the usual home grounds of the North York Astros because the field was available. The game was carried live on Rogers Community channel.

There were plenty of chances to end this game in regulation time. Lions Alex Arbello at 83 minutes had a 30 yard freekick down the middle that hit the top of the bar and goes out of play. Shooters goalie Camilo Benzi was temporary injured on this play when he stretched for the ball. At 86 minutes Shooters Matthew Palleschi crossed from the right into the goal area and Jason DeThomasis hit the bar from 6 yards. At 109 minutes Lions Cameron Medwin passed to Alex Arbello taps back to Medwin and his blast from inside the Shooters box injures the goalie although Benzi waited for the ball to be cleared before collapsing. Goal scorer Marco Terminesi subbed in at 76 minutes and replaced Kadien Lecky.

League leading scorer Daniel Nascimento of the Lions had his best chances on free kicks but mainly struck them right into the player walls set up to block him. He couldn’t draw a Penalty kick at 66 minutes when he ran on the left end line cutting towards the goalmouth and deked a defender and was then ‘tripped’ from behind and another defender cleared the ball.

Referee Manuel Orellano didn’t give out any Yellow cards until the goal celebration in a close marking but clean game. The referee’s assistants couldn’t please anyone as both teams were called many times for offside. Biggest complaint about Orellano was after the goal when Lions earned just a freekick when one of their players was tackled near the edge of the Shooters box. Should this have been a Penalty kick? Well I knew what the Lions had thought but one of the Shooters officials leaned over the barrier dividing the team benches and said “That should have been a Penalty kick or no call at all”. After the game I asked the Ennio the PA announcer who was on the other side of the field and much closer to the infraction “where was the infraction” and he said inside the box.

Tonight’s win will set the Shooters up most likely with a semi-final game against the winner of the Serbian White Eagles (ranked 3rd) vs. North York Astros (6th) played Saturday the 11th also at Esther Shiner Stadium because the field is available. We heard announcements during the game that the Toronto Croatia (4th) vs. Portugal FC (5th) game had ended 2-1 for Portugal FC on a come from behind effort.

Result of the Saturday October 11th, 2008 CSL game between Serbian White Eagles and North York Astros played at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York at 8:00pm.

This was a one game Quarterfinal between the 3rd place team (White Eagles) against the 6th place team (Astros).

9 min…White Eagles Milos Scepanovic GOAL…SWE Alex Braletic passes ball to Scepanovic at 25 yards and he heads ball down on left on run and his low 12 yard shot is under goalie Joshua Lemos diving left.

46 min…Astros Franco Lalli GOAL…Lalli low 22 yard shot from right has ball squeeze between goalie Dan Pelc and the right post soon after a throw-in from the right.

End of regulation time……..1-1

Second Period Silver Goal Extra Time

115 min…White Eagles Alex Braletic GOAL…SWE Milan Jahogvic rolls ball to Braletic at 25 yards who stops and blasts 25 yard shot into right side of net beyond flying goalie.

122 min…game ends.

Final Score:…..Serbian White Eagles………2……….North York Astros…….1…..(2nd overtime)…….

Attendance was about 120 people on this moderate evening with the temperature dropping after the first half. There was a bright sun for only the first half in the west which the White Eagles had to face. This game was played at Esther Shiner stadium in North York because the stadium was available. Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke where the White Eagles hold their home games is closed for the season while undergoing replacing natural grass with Field Turf.

Astros played hard with forwards Anthony Bahadur and Go Nagaoka instead of their regular forwards Selvin Lemmie (injured) and Jonathan Hurtis (suspended).

White Eagles got by with leading scorer/playmaker Sasa Viciknez confined to the bench. I asked him why he was there and the signal he gave me in his limited English was that he had a back injury.

White Eagles almost avoided overtime when Dragon Radovic in center at 25 yards passed the ball forward and left to Alex Braletic on left end line. His cross is behind goalie out at 10 yards and Milos Scepanovic flying header is just over the bar.

Astros almost won the game at 88 minutes when Astros Anthony Bahadur charged up the middle as Astros Martin Artale stopped realizing he was well offside. Bahadur rolled a 20 yard shot just a yard wide of the left post as goalie Dan Pelc charged out and crashed together with Bahadur. Astros Abe Oran earned a Yellow card for complaining about the knock on this play.

This was a hard checking game but not many cards given out by referee Vito Curalli. Both teams were complaining about the frequent calling of offsides.

Same complaints as last night’s quarterfinal game between Italia Shooters and Brampton Lions also played at this stadium because of availability. Also spooky was the winning goal was scored within a minute at the same point of the game last night.

Before the start of this game the result of the 3:00pm quarterfinal game between #1 ranked Trois-Rivieres Attak and #8 St Catharines Wolves was known as a 2-0 victory for the Attak. This win by the White Eagles means they play next Friday in the semi-final against Italia Shooters.

as an Astros supporter, I'm disappointed but they had a great season and they put up a hell of a fight considering they were missing two of the most dynamic players in the league.

As of a couple of days ago, Lammie was still in the hospital. I hope he gets better ASAP. As for Hurtis, i'm really curious to see what happens with this player. he is really talented.

Centennial Park is going to FieldTurf. Wow. :(

I guess it makes sense for a multi-use community facility but it's one less grass field stadium.

It could has gone either way, but the experience by the White Eagles players is what made the difference. Even thought Serbia was missing Sasa Viciknez, they still have a very good and experience team able to beat anybody in the CSL. The Astros missing their two top players was too much liability for their ambitions and at the end experience prevail.

Serbia are my choice to win it all (now that TC is out ;)) but if there's going to be an upset then I'll go with Portugal FC.

The CSL has to do something about the officiating for next season, the referee was a joke. He showed a yellow card to the W Eagles GK, after he stop a breakaway by Astros with a NFL FOOTBALL like tackle outside the penalty area, that should had been a red card or nothing. Then he didn't call a clear penalty in favor of Serbia, and so on. The assistent referees were even more ridiculous, never keeping up with the play and raising the flag at the wrong time.

They were all too young and inexperience to do a CSL Quarter final game. CSL should only use the best and most experience referees for these games.
