CSL Week 21 (end of regular season)

Recommended Posts

Result of the Friday October 3rd, 2008 CSL game between Toronto Croatia and TFC Academy played at Hershey Centre in Mississauga at 8:00pm.

18 min…Croatia Tihomir Maletic GOAL…Maletic gets pass from 40 yards on right and from 15 yards turns TFCA Ashtone Morgan inside out and shoots low blast down middle from 12 yards into left corner of net.

85 min…TFCA Viktor Anastasov GOAL…TFCA Max Marsh runs along left end line and dekes TC Robert Fran and passes into goalmouth for Anastasov to shoot a low 3 yard tap-in to left corner of net behind goalie Roy Blanche.

89 min…Croatia Hayden Fitzwilliam GOAL…TC Tommy Ples pushes pass from left that has Fitzwilliam charge and kick in from 5 yards to left post over sprawling goalie Jarrett Humphreys.

94 min…game ends.

Final Score:……..Toronto Croatia…….2………TFC Academy………..1………..

Attendance was about 150 on this cold night with a strong wind from the north. Fans were divided between Croatia loyalists and TFCA parents. Some hecklers for Croatia were actually louder than the parents. Parkas and winter boots were recommended for everyone to keep warm. There had been a few drops of rain on the drive here but none fell for the length of the game.

Referee Dave Barrie game out some Yellow cards in the second half to keep the game under control.

Hayden Fitzwilliam played as one of the forwards tonight rather than his usual winger spot. He was fed the ball numerous times but TFCA goalie Jarrett Humphreys made some good point blank saves until the end of the game. TFCA players dominated at times during the second half to get the tying goal and a tie game would have been a fair result. Croatia goalie Roy Blanche played well also although it looked like TFCA players were trying to chip his rather short stature.

The way the schedule was set up, the first game of the season had these two teams play the league’s season opener and TFC Academy beat Toronto Croatia (last year’s champions but missing some key players early in the season) 1-0 in a huge upset which got me predicting great things for the TFCA. This game had the Academy out of the playoffs (10th out of 11 in the league) against Croatia who with one more game to go have a chance to rise to 2nd or 3rd and avoid a road trip to 1st place Trois-Rivieres Attak in the semi-finals.

Robin,

Any idea where the Rockets v. Roma match is taking place. League says Esther Shiner, Astros say "Downsview Park", which I have no idea where exactly that is. Since you're the man in "the know"...

Cheers

This game will definitely be at Downsview Park. I wish I could go because its a lot easier to get to Downsview Park for me.

Roma needs to win this game in order to have any hope of a playoff spot. Astros will be without star #10 Jon Hurtis who picked up a red card last week (he also scored 4 goals for the reserves this week to ruin the TFC U16's hopes of winning the Reserve Division title.

Result of the Sunday October 5th, 2008 CSL game between North York Astros and St Catharines Wolves played at Downsview Park in North York at 3:00pm.

33 min…Wolves Calvin Rogario GOAL…Wolves Joseph DelPriore charges to through ball up middle but goalie Joshua Lemos slides to ball but pushes it right for Rogario to roll 20 yarder into open net eluding sliding defender.

40 min…Wolves Tony Mermigas GOAL…Wolves Joe Conte 45 yard freekick from left has Wolves Joseph DelPriore head ball down, he passes forward to Mermigas who rolls 10 yarder under goalie.

87 min…Wolves Stefan Kamendy GOAL…Wolves Arnaldo Magnotta cornerkick from right has Kamendy in crowd of players head 10 yarder into top left corner of net.

Final Score:………….North York Astros……….2……………St Catharines Wolves…………..3…………

Attendance was about 80 on this warm day with a threat of rain that never took place once the game started. In fact there was a bright sun for part of the game. This game was rescheduled from the Astros regular home park of Esther Shiner Stadium. Downsview Park is part of the old Downsview military base which is now a huge park. There were still a few private cargo planes taking off on a nearby runaway. A park official said the Field-turf was only installed a month ago.

The game was held as part of a Fall Fair and admission was free but they couldn’t bait people from giving up playing Ultimate Frisbee at the other Field-turf field beside this one, the kite flying display in the parking lot, nor the bazaar in the open field on the other side of this field. The game had a 29 break between halves as the reasoning was the change rooms were quite a walk away. There was no scoreboard installed at this park. Early arrivals were given a souvenir t-shirt of Downsview Park.

Astros started off great and dominated for the first 30 minutes but after that it was all Wolves who had to win this game to earn the last playoff spot on the last day of the regular season. Astros had made the playoffs a few weeks ago. Both teams played hard with some rough checks thrown and referee Dan Popescu had to give out two Yellow cards each.

Wolves Joseph DelPriore had about six chances on his own to score the winner as he was most effective running up the middle. Neither team liked the referee’s assistants as they frequently were complaining about offside calls being made or missed but at least it was equal on both teams.

Wolves win allows them to overtake Windsor Border Stars and clinch the 8th and final playoff spot. They now travel to the league champs Trois-Rivieres Attak next weekend for the one game quarter final. Astros most likely will most likely to play the Serbian White Eagles as a road team next weekend as they finished 6th.

The Wolves had made it tough on themselves with only earning a tie in their last home game against last place London City who finished the season with no wins for the season. That result left the Wolves in the position of absolutely having to win today.

Good game, if St Catharines play Trois Rivieres with the same drive they played against the Astros, I think they could beat anybody including TR.

The game look like it was over after the first 10 minutes because the Astros were like a machine, but then St Cats realize they needed the win to stay in the playoffs and really turned the game around. They can play much better than what they've been playing this season.

The referee had to be the worst referee I've seen this season, he stop at least 4 advantage plays for both teams, on some of those the players were on their way to the goal on breakaways, just to be stop by the ref and get a free kick 20 yards further back. He was terrible for both teams, the CSL has to get rid of these referees.

The Astros were still missing players from the starting line up, Zeballos, Hurtis, Carbajal and Artale were four I didn't see on the field at all, and they are important players. I really like St Cats today and I think they'll be hard to stop now.

^ I asked the same question at the game, somebody from Downsview Park told me that this game was a promotional event by the Park, it was presented as part of the Fall Fair festival.

I just heard today that Shane Lammie got injured in the game, he received a kick on his sheen that resulted in major damage to his leg and he is in the hospital now and will be there for a while.

The referee was a joke and thanks to him the game got out of hand, he was absolutely incompetent.

So I guess now the Astros are playing Serbia with out their two top scorers, Lemmie and Hurtis, not easy at all for the Astros.

That's relly bad news about Lammie. I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope he recovers and is ready to play next season if this injury is indeed so serious.

Hurtis should play the next game....He played for the Astros reserves the other day and scored 4 goals against TFC U16s. have you heard something about him getting injured?

So it was a normal park that the CSL game was played in.....

Downsview Park is a massive property around 401 and Keele.

They installed some really nice soccer pitches which the Astros have been using for practice all season.

I assume that the Astros management decided to play a game there during this festival to see how it went. Clearly, the turnout was not great so they may or may not try this again.

Hurtis had a two game suspension for a red card he got against St Cats last week, so he is missing the play off game. He could only play again if the Astros beat Serbia and move on to the semis.

crap...Astros are in TOUGH without either of Hurtis or Lammie.

lets see if Coach Rafa finds a way to rally the troops. Artale and Nagaoka are going to have to have the game of their lives and the D is going to have to play very tight.
