Former Champ
Earlier I noticed that on the BBC site for the World Cup every team had the tag 'ladies' (ex Norway ladies vs Canada ladies). Just as I went to ask what our PC posters thought... it had been changed.[:0]
N-A
I think thats is a force of habbit mistake of a BBC reporter. Most of the women's team in the Premiership are called Arsenal Ladies, Fulham Ladies etc. They probably noticed and quickly changed it.
Richard
According to Dictionary.com, lady = a woman who is refined, polite, and well-spoken.
Chet
According to my grandma, playing sports is unladylike.
Guest speedmonk42
There is also a similar naming convention in the US college system I believe.
Richard
It is my impression that many young north American women nowadays do not like being referred to as ladies. I also read in one of the blogs written by a WNT player that some of the WNT members really had difficulty in Singapore because spitting in public is against the law and subject to heavy fines or worse. Spitting in public hardly fits the dictionary definition of 'lady'.

For my money they can include chewing gum too. Most people with gum in their mouths look like moronic cows chewing the cud, never mind the disgusting, sticky, littering mess when they're done with it. terpfan68
Some people are secret chewers though. These are mostly old folk who grew up at a time when gum chewing was against school rules (and severly punished). We developed a style that was almost not noticable from all but the most discerning teacher and the abilty to swallow it if interegated.

Richard
Key word there is 'almost' And there were very good reasons why it was frowned upon, just look around you.
