loyola Posted April 3, 2006 Share Posted April 3, 2006 http://www.whitecapsfc.com/news/?id=2801 WHITECAPS DEFEAT UBC 1-0 « Back April 2, 2006 - The Whitecaps defeated the UBC Thunderbirds by a score of 1-0 at the Point Grey campus Sunday afternoon, to run their preseason record to 2-1. Midfielder Martin Nash scored the game's only goal in the 65th minute, finishing off a neat passing play. Joey Gjertsen slipped the ball through to Dave Morris breaking on the right, and the lanky winger took the ball deep into the penalty area before cutting it back for Nash, who slid to stab it in from five yards out. There were Whitecaps goalkeepers at both ends of the field in this game, as Josh Wicks earned the shutout for the Caps, while his understudy Serge Djekanovic started in goal for UBC. Djekanovic made several key saves to keep the score close. In the 41st minute, he blocked a shot from Tino Cucca 12 yards out, held a 22-yard blast from Steve Kindel at the hour mark, and then pushed over a hard shot from Andrew Corazza in the 78th minute. The Whitecaps' best chance to put the game away though came late, as at 87' Nash sent speedy striker Sita-Taty Matondo in on a breakaway, but Djekanovic stood up well to make the save. UBC's best chances to draw level came with ten minutes remaining, as Niko Marcina volleyed over the bar from outside the box. Minutes later, Paul Bahia had a chance to equalize in front of Wicks, but volleyed well wide. The Whitecaps next pre-season game is Thursday, April 6, at Tsawwassen's Brandrith Park for the annual match against the Vancouver Metro Soccer League All-Stars. Kick-off is 6:30pm.
