So that's Group winners:

Juventus

Arsenal

Barcelona

Villareal (smallest town in history to make it this far in Champions)

AC Milan

Liverpool

Lyon

Inter Milan

Facing any of the following except from the same Association:

Bayern Munich

Ajax

Werder Bremen

Benfica

PSV

Real Madrid

Chelsea

Thus the only match-ups that cannot be had are Madrid-Barça, Madrid-Villareal and Chelsea-Arsenal. Draw on December 16th.

I thought its also not possible to draw against a team from your group. Did they change that? I hope not. Who wants to see the same teams matchup again?

Great story Villareal is. And they're no fluke. Especially considering their best player, Riquelme, was injured much of the first-round.... But I think the town of Villareal is still a bit bigger than Monaco.

Liverpool-Chelsea should also be added to the list of not possible.

I don't think Liverpool is considered an English team for draw purposes. That's how they ended up in Chelsea's group to begin with.

Damn! I just finished watching the Udinese x Barca match. Barca is scary at the moment. Their "B" team essentially man-handled Udinese in Italy. Could have been 5-nil.

Though I like Werder Bremen... I feel bad for Udinese, they have impressed me the last two years. They are a selling team usually, so it would of been a good story had they reached the round of 16. Good job to reach the UEFA Cup spot considering it was a tricky group.

You be right, sir. Here are the opening final round draw (Dec 16) rules,

from http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/europe/4509282.stm

"Last 16 draw conditions:

Teams from the same national association cannot be drawn together.

Liverpool have no 'country protection' because of the special circumstances of their entry into the competition, but cannot face Chelsea (same group) or Arsenal (group winners like Liverpool).

The winners and runners-up of the same group cannot be drawn together.

Group winners will be kept apart in the draw.

Group runners-up will play the first leg of the two-legged knock-out ties at home, giving the group winners the perceived advantage of playing at home in the second leg. "

Yes, I know I screwed up that analysis. No two teams already having faced each other, and Liverpool is not considered an FA team, so Liverpool could have faced Arsenal if they had not both won their groups.

I too think it is funny I left out Rangers. But would love to see them for my Barça, especially to make my Celtic-supporting friends happy here.

As is you cannot call this Champions League, but since the slight edge would go to Chelsea, Barça and perhaps Juventus on the basis of league play, with Liverpool, Milan and Bayern in there next as tough sides and unpredictable Arsenal and Inter, I think that if anyone can knock of two of the top three mentioned before the final, the one standing come the final will be the winner.

Barça, though, has been seriously hurt by the loss of Xavi, he is truly irreplaceable, and his being out means we have to play in a different way, more physical perhaps, less creative in possession. Though I will say that Barça has the deepest squad in Europe right now.
