Austria Vienna's businessman boss Stronach quits

VIENNA, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Austria Vienna chief Frank Stronach said on Monday he is leaving the club after protracted disputes with fans and management over how to run the club.

Stronach, who is also chairman of Canadian auto parts supplier Magna International, brought millions of euros to the club after taking over in 1998 but came under fire from supporters and big Austrian football names such as Toni Polster and Herbert Prohaska for his leadership.

Under his reign Austria Vienna have changed coaches nine times and won the Austrian league only once. Club members have tabled a no-confidence motion against Stronach for the club's annual meeting on Thursday.

"There is currently inside and outside the club great unrest and many different opinions on how and by whom Austria Vienna should be led," Stronach said in a statement.

"Such a situation is not good for the future of a club."

Despite the disputes, the 22-times Austrian champions are currently second in the league on the same number of points as leaders Red Bull Salzburg. They were beaten by Viking Stavanger in the UEFA Cup qualification round in September.
