Canadian goalie ready

Tromso:

Tromso IL has already found a replacement for Lars Hirschfeld. Today TIL came to an agreement with the canadian national goalie Kenny Stamatopoulus (26), who tonight is playing for Canada against Luxembourg.

- We have made an oral agreement on a 3-years contract, confirms Tore Rismo in TIL to Nordlys.

- Is Kenny better than Lars?

- Impossible to say. Of course he keeps a good standard. We have been keeping an eye on him for a while and have good recomendations, says Rismo.

TIL is, according to Rismo, in agreement with the swede club Enkoping about the transfer. Kenny Stamatopoulos was last season on loan to Bodens BK in the swedish second higest level. He, as Lars, has two passports. (Greek-Canadian)

Should we take this as good news? According to statistics he has been on a team which has been relegated every year since 2003:

2003: Enköping (Allsvenskan) - relegated

2004: Enköping (Superettan) - relegated

2005 - Boden (Superettan) - relegated

2006: Tromsø IL (Tippeligaen) - OMG

He has presumable been targeted for the second spot behind a soon recovered Knut Borch which has been out with a long term injury.

Kenny is definitely a capable backup. He may even push Borch a bit for the starting spot.

With regards to his relegation problems, I think most reports indicated that he often kept his team in the game and the team's problems would have been much worse were it not for him.

Is he better that Lars? Probably not taking Lars recent form into consideration, but he's still fairly good. He held his own against Spain.

He was also the first team goalie for Kalamata in Greece, when they were in both the First and Second Division. This is where he got his start at a young age.

Things turned sour for Kenny in Kalamata, when he returned to Canada to play in the Gold Cup. Kenny ended up on the bench for every match of the Gold Cup (while Lars played), and the management for Kalamata was furious. They would not even let him train with the youth or reserve squad for weeks. He never played another match in Greece, and after months in the doghouse, left for Sweden.

This will be a good fit for both Kenny and TIL. Fantastic news !
