PCSL kicks of 2005 season this weekend

Recommended Posts

The PCSL 2005 season begins this weekend with Penticton Pinnacles men and newcomers Norvan/NSGC Eagles women travelling to Seattle to face Seatle Hibernian and Caledonian on Saturday. Penticton then comes up against the Whitecaps FC Reserve men on Sunday at Town Centre Stadium in Coquitlam.

Good luck on the new season Richard. Don't be afraid to post some updates on here as the season progresses. There are probably one or two followers of the CPSL besides me who wouldn't mind hearing about the title race on the coast (and to be honest I've never really found the PCSL website very navigable). Also, would you ever be able to post attendence figures? Even if they're approximate I'd be interested to hear how the various member clubs do.

Mike.

Thanks Mike but rest assured nothing on this board frightens me ;).

If you have trouble with the PCSL website please email a description of your problem to webmaster@pcsl.org.

The league does not track attendance but I was at the Whitecaps Reserves vs Penticton game today in Coquitlam and would estimate there were about 120-150 people. The score was 5-1 to the Whitecaps which was a rather harsh reflection on Penticton I think, they played a good and entertaining game.

The only way the attendance hit 120 was if you include the players in the count, plus the coaches, refs and concession staff.

But it was a good first game to the season, although Penticton looked pretty poor.

The Whitecaps reserve team coach did not play anyone who sat on the bench during yesterdays senior team. He didn't even dress either of the two backup Caps keepers, (Wicks and Djekanovic). Its hard to understand why they call it a reserve team. Reserve to what?

The PCSL was embarassed today as a game between the SFU Clan/Columbus vs Fraser Valley Action was cancelled at game time due to field conditions. The Fraser Valley team and its fans were angry as they had driven from Langley, 90 minutes away, to get to the game. One would expect the home SFU/Columbus team to have checked the field before the game. They may have good players but their management group is atrocious.

Columbus was the home team for this game and responsible for the venue. They will no doubt be facing a heavy fine for what transpired.

How much would you say constitutes a heavy fine?

The Witecaps Reserves beat the Okanagan (Kelowna ) team 5-0 today.

The Caps team contained two players who will be playing at US universities on full ride scholarships next year, Alex Elliot who will be at U of Portland and Massumi Turnbull who wll be at U of Kentucky.

The Whitecaps won 2-0 Thursday evening (May 12) against the Vancouver Thunderbirds. There were Whitecaps playing at both ends of the pitch in this game, as Serge Djekanovic, the backup keeper for the Whitecaps first team, got the start for the Thunderbirds.

Richard, based on results to date, it looks like the PCSL will be a two horse race, the Whitecaps reserves vs Seattle Hibs. And the Caps are only using amateurs, no pro's like Said Ali who get almost no playing time with the Caps.

Seattle Saints aka "Hibs & Caley" are lead by a college Senior (next year) Bobby McAlister (son of 1977 NASL Rookie of the Year Jimmy McAlister) and Ian and Alex Chursky (both amatures, one still in college), sons of Canadian-born former Seattle Sounders keeper Tony Chursky!

Side note: Bobby & Alex won the National Championship with Seattle University in 2004!

"And the Caps are only using amateurs" and your point is?

The point is it should not be called a reserve team. The Caps back-up goalie who has never set foot on the field during a regular game, and Said Ali, and others never play for the main team also do not play for the reserves, since its not a real reserve team.

Take the name the club chose for their PCSL entries up with the Whitecaps FC, not me. The PCSL does not chose names for its member clubs. The intent all along was certainly to play some of their benched first team players and they have been doing it on the women's side. Their backup keeper Srdjan Djekanovic has been playing for the Vancouver Thunderbirds.

The Caps reserve team defeated Seattle Hibs 3-2 thanks to 3 goals from Brian Vanschagen. The Caps roster included Gordie Chin, Steve Frazao (who played some exhibition games for the senior team), Andrew Corazza and Cam Wilson (who replaced Frazao at the 75 minute mark). Corazza, Frazao and Wilson did nothing, while Chin played well and hit a post. Van Svchagen started at striker, and potted his first two, then moved to midfield from where he got his third.

Missing were Alex Elliott and Masumi Turnbull who are with the U20 team.

The Caps reserve team goalie today, as he has been all seson, was Denis Kindel, not Djekanovic who played in the recent friendly for the senior Caps against Sunderland. Djekanovic was also picked for the PCSL all-star team to play against Sunderland last week, while Kindel was not chosen. It appears, that the Caps reserve coach, Chris Bennett, prefers Kindel but everyone else prefers Djekanovic. Kindel did make some nice saves to gain the victory.

Djekanovic is above Kindel in the Whitecaps backup keeper rankings which is why he was picked ahead of Kindel for the BC All Stars and probably why he was subbed in for the senior team against Sunderland ahead of Kindel.

I understand the USL will only allow players signed to amateur contracts to play outside of the USL system, something not properly researched by the Whitecaps before the PCSL season began because that certainly was their intention. This explains though why we have not seen some of the benched first team players in the reserve lineup much to their frustration. The Whitecaps reportedly have been really pleased with their PCSL experience. The reserve women's team coach Matt Holbrook has announced that the women's reserve program will be maintained year round and they look forward to being back in the PCSL for 2006. No news yet about the men's reserve program.

Analyst, it seems your remarks earlier about the PCSL men's division being a two horse race have been proven wrong. As of now there are five clubs within four points of each other at the top of the standings.

Well, here we are at the end of the season and despite alll the smack talk about certain "reserve" sides and "powerhouses" who is topping the league table? New West? Whitecaps? Seattle?

:D

Nope, just little ol' Victoria United repeating as PCSL champions. [8D]

Oh, and Steve Scott (Victoria Unted) is also topping the league scoring table. :D

Sorry, just had to. [:I]

Yes, my prediction was inaccurate. The league is quite competitive, with a few exceptions.
