Rocket Robin
TORONTO LYNX MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE LYNX ADD 2 BEFORE ROSTER FREEZE DEADLINE! Friday, July 30, 2004 (TORONTO, ON) – With a stretch drive that includes 9 matches during the month of August, the Toronto Lynx added some much needed depth to their lineup in time for the A-League roster freeze deadline with the acquisitions of Edmilson De Carvalho and Matthew O’Connor, both on loan agreement from the Hamilton Thunder of the CPSL. As of Monday, July 26th, A-League Clubs were no longer able to procure player acquisitions, however, the Lynx were able to secure loans for these two quality players prior to the deadline. With his attacking style and deadly free kicks, Edmilson has become a standout player for the Thunder this season, scoring 4 times in League play. This 27-year Brazilian-native is a former youth player with two of the biggest Clubs in Brazil, Sao Paulo and Corinthians, where he won the Brazilian Junior Championship and was the top scorer. He also has significant international experience, scoring 23 goals with Viveroa Marina in the Spanish 2nd Division and competed with San Jose of the Brazilian 2nd Division and the Air Force Team in Lima, Peru. Through a translator, Edmilson expressed his excitement at joining the Lynx. “I want to be one of the guys that helps push the team into the playoffs and I know that I can contribute to the team and play well for Duncan and the Toronto fans!” “With so many games in August and two back-to-back series, we needed to added some strength to the bench,” explained Lynx Head Coach, Duncan Wilde. “We are aiming to get as many points as possible for the rest of the season and make a run at the playoffs. Matthew and Edmilson are two quality young players that have caught our attention and we are happy to have them on board”. O’Connor is no stranger to Wilde having played for him last season in Hamilton. “I am hoping to help the Lynx make the playoffs,” commented O’Connor. “I am going to work hard and use my speed and experience to help the team.” The young Canadian defender/midfielder is a hard working player with good vision and passing skills. With international experience for Canada at the U17 and U20 levels, O’Connor has been a star with the Thunder for the previous 3 seasons. The Mississauga-native is a former U16 OYSL Most Valuable Player who has come through the ranks of the Mississauga Soccer Club, Dixie Soccer Club and Brampton Soccer Club. The Lynx play the Virginia Beach Mariners on Holiday Monday, August 2nd at 6:00 for their annual Carib Fest! Guests include, the speaker of the Legislature, Alvin Curling and MP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore, Jean Augustine. Fans will be able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Caribbean with musical entertainment being provided by the Caribbean Dance Theatre. Michael Crampton
You Stynx bastards stealing our Eddy D!? If he gets injured before the CPSL playoffs I'll find the Stynxster and personally beat him up (joke). I'm surprised Ol'Dunc still has decent enough relations with the club to work out a deal like this. Mike. p.s. How the hell did the Keay boys get that drum into the Liverpool/Porto game? Guest Jeffery S.
When I read that about Edmilson at a Spanish 2nd division club scoring 23 goals I knew something was wrong, as the club simply does not exist. Or better, there is a futsal club in Lugo that had him on the roster in 02-03, then called Celeiro Viveiro, now called A Mariña. That was a silver (2nd) division team. 23 goals in futsal is different from that many on the grass I'd say. Wonder if he just invented a bio for Thunder, or if Lynx were happy to fudge that supposedly impressive fact over.
AlanDouglas
Being quite familiar with how these kind of media releases are put together, I'm pretty sure it was an unintentional misunderstanding. By the looks of it, I'd say the Lynx media guy probably worked from a copy of Edmilson's resume, poorly translated from Portuguese, which would typically have a fairly terse list of years, teams, leagues, and any notable accomplishments. If it were me, I would have checked the team names against the rsssf archives, but most A-League media directors aren't aware that such resources exist.
