Canadienfan
Why was it that the during past several years Pesh was not playing or being called for the MNT? Was it club commitment? Pesh and Holger not get along? what?
Guest Can. in UK
It seems as though Holger thought Pesch had no place in the squad. Pesch insisted that he wanted to play but Holger stopped calling him up.

Gian-Luca
That's not quite accurate - Pesch himself has indicated on Canadian television that he didn't want to play for Holger.
Guest Can. in UK
Didn't he say something that he didn't know why he wasn't being called because he "hadn't retired yet" or something to that effect...
Gian-Luca
There was some confusion about that at the time when Holger was coach, but shortly after Holger left they interviewed Pesch on Soccercentral where he stated he didn't like playing for Holger, didn't want to cross the Atlantic to do it & was very much looking forward to Yallop as the new coach. Holger himself stated in a Neil Davidson article that Pesch told him he wanted to focus on his club career, though in the same article Pesch was quoted as saying something along the lines that you mentioned. Free kick
In defence of Osieck. He appeared frustrated, just as any other fan, with the lack of goal production from the strikers since he had been there ( except for the GC in 2000). Lets not forget that Canada only scored 1 goal in six games in WC semi-final qualifying. Plus we went through three goal-less games in the Confed cup. Pesch was not the only one to pay the price, Corrazin didn't get many phone calls from the coach either after that Confed cup. You cannot fault the coach for taking action to remedy a problem. That is what a coach is supposed to to do so he made personel changes and started calling different players like De rosario and Rad. Who both performed very well. This is not intended to praise or defend Holger Osieck's overall work as a coach but, by the sounds of what I was reading in this thread, a casual observer might interpret that there was something sinister going on. Pesch just hadn't scored for Canada in a long time and the coach took corrective action. We wish Pesch the best this time around.
Peschfan
Well the fact of the matter is Pesch and Holger didnt see eye to eye on a few things. He was one of the many that did not get on with Holger. Perhaps the poor form on the national team was due to the poor coaching. Unhappy players usually dont play well. I mean Radz also wasnt always hopin over when he got the call either and I dont see as calling up one striker for friendlies as solving the goal drought.the fact is Pesch wanted to play for Canada but Holger did not want to have him. Pesch was willing to talk it out, holger never called so Pesch left it at that. Pesch never retired from international football or made himself unavailable, he was always ready for selection but never got a call. If he was not wanted, there was nothing he could do. He had to wait out his tenure. the fact is Holger is gone and Pesch is still there. The Frank Yallop Experience has mended fences with the team. they looked like they were enjoying the camp in ottawa and look like they have a positive attitude. Happy players make for much better players then crabby players under crabby coaches do.
