Moosehead
Here is another article that explains the situation much better. Bravo CIBC "The agreement is more than twice as large as any other sponsorship deal in the association's history". CIBC banks on Canadian soccer http://tsn.ca/soccer/news_story.asp?ID=77433&hubName=soccer Canadian Press 3/22/2004 TORONTO (CP) - Canadian soccer scored at the bank Monday when CIBC has announced a $4.3-million, five-year sponsorship agreement with the Canadian Soccer Association. The deal includes sponsorship of all 13 CSA men's and women's national team plus all international games played in Canada. The agreement is more than twice as large as any other sponsorship deal in the association's history. ``It truly is a special day. It's a monumental day in terms of our relations with the corporate sector,'' said association COO Kevan Pipe. While the world governing body of soccer does not allow logos on game uniforms, the CIBC brand will be used on national team warmup gear. CIBC advertising will also be stepped up during telecasts of international games and in billboards in stadiums. The $4.3 million is all cash and does not include any kind of payment in advertising or other services. ``The secret to this deal is that we've got a five-year agreement with such substantial numbers,'' Pipe said. ``And that gives us a basis of planning to take over that five-year time period. CIBC money is already factored into the 2004 CSA budget, estimated at about $12 million. The CIBC injection into this year's budget is about the same as the association gets from the federal government. The Canadian Soccer Association relies on sponsors for about $1.5 million of its funding this year, with almost half coming from the CIBC. The majority - about $5 million - comes from dues of members across the country. The CIBC will also be involved in the CSA's mini-soccer programs, helping more than 5,000 boys and girls aged five to 12 to learn and play the game. The bank will also sponsor mini-soccer festivals that attracts more than 400,000 people including participants, parents, volunteers and coaches across the country. ``Through our association with the CSA, CIBC is helping to develop the next generation of Canadian soccer players - within Canada and internationally,'' CIBC executive vice-president Stephen Graham said in a statement Monday. ``Soccer is the No. 1 participatory sport in Canada with participation rates growing steadily each year. ``We are proud to support a sport that is so widely embraced by Canadians and provides such positive influences for young people.'' CIBC also announced a four-year, $4-million sponsorship deal with Alpine Canada in 2002.
