Pellerud Selects 17-Players For Camp

Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Women’s World Cup Team Head Coach Even Pellerud has named 17-players for a nine day training camp in Fort Lauderdale, Florida from Dec. 5 – 13, 2003 in preparation for the CONCACAF Olympic Qualification trournament in Costa Rica from February 25 - March 7, 2004.

The training camp will be Canada’s first since they placed fourth at the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup USA following a 3-1 loss to the United States on October 11, 2003 in the third place match.

Returning for the training camp is Isabelle Harvey of Montreal, Quebec who last played for Canada against Japan on April 9, 2002 at the France International tournament.

The newest addition to the roster is Ottawa Fury and University of Tennessee midfielder/defender Marie-Eve Nault of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec.

Breanna Boyd, Candace Chapman, and Randee Hermus will not join the camp due to injuries. Andrea Neil is not available.

Other University players were not released due to much absence earlier this fall.

“The team has had seven weeks of recovery since the bronze medal game in World cup 2003,” said Pellerud. “For some of the players, recovery has consisted of coming back from injuries; some of those are not fully recovered yet, and will not participate in this camp. Others went straight from the Women’s World Cup to their university duties and have been active in NCAA; some of them are still playing in the final stage of the tournament.”

“The main objective for this camp is to close the event gap between World Cup and Olympic Qualification tournament in February. The players have until now followed a combination of individual programs and team programs. Now it is time to refocus on soccer fitness and intensity.”

As fitness is a priority at this point, the camp will consist of a large number of practices.

as i posted about at Go Big Red!! last week, i'm so glad to see isabelle harvey get a call up ... the team really needs defenders, and i think she still got lots in her game and hope she really establishes herself at camp and shows coach and the team that they still need her!

lots of players are missing b/c of injuires/school commitments ... and both boyd and hermus are still rehabbing and hope to be back in time for stuff in the new year.
