Rocket Robin
CPSL Toronto Croatia vs North York Astros by Rocket Robin Result of the CPSL game of Wednesday August 6th 2003 between Toronto Croatia and North York Astros played at Memorial Stadium in Streetsville at 8:00pm. The result was errr...the game was not played. There was a game already going on at 7:30pm with a bunch of about 8 year olds. Ok so that would have gone on for maybe another half hour. What about after that? Next would teenage teams including one that had come all the way from Waterloo. Rather than override them who also supposedly had a valid permit, John from Toronto Croatia agreed to let them have their game too. Obviously the City of Mississauga had double booked the field. The CPSL office is supposed to double check the week before the game because supposedly some towns/cities are notorious for doing this. Chief of referees Tony Comacho listened to the Toronto Croatia execs confirm that the stadium lights are on a timer and at 11:00pm...CLICK...they're off! No use starting the CPSL game at 10:00pm then. OK the game is off leaving the two teams, game officials, and at least 100 fans standing around (although there could have been more but mixed in the stands with the parents of the kids game). This was my second choice for a game as I was going to see the Toronto Supra vs Durham Flames game but with both teams playing in the Canada Open Cup on the weekend they both decided to cancel their game at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke at 8:30pm. About 15 minutes into my drive home...CLICK...the lightbulb above my head goes off. It would have been worth it to get someone to make a cellphone call to someone hanging around at Centennial Stadium, as the stadium was 'paid' for, maybe the whole game, fans etc. could have been moved to that stadium. Only about 10kms away. Ahh people had started to scatter when I drove off so it was probably too late to turn back. DJT
I say that North York should have been given the three points. Default by Toronto Croatia for not having their field ready! Hey, North York are the only ones that can't be blamed here! Ah, the CPSL, what fun.
DJT
Wednesday, August 6 St. Catharines 1 Mississauga 0 From the CPSL site: St. Catharines Wolves took over top spot in the Western Conference of the Canadian Professional Soccer League with a 1-0 win over Mississauga Olympians at Club Roma on Wednesday. This was the lone game played after two games listed in the official schedule were postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date. Carlo Arghittu continued his prolific scoring when he found the net on a penalty kick at the 76th minute of a closely contested affair, the penalty awarded when Mark Mulholland of St. Catharines was brought down by Olympians’ Dwayne Wright. Arghittu is red hot for St. Catharines with a goalscoring spree that totals nine for the season, including a hat-trick last Wednesday in a 3-1 win over North York Astros, then scoring the winner in the 2-1 Open Canada Cup victory over London City on Friday night. St. Catharines take over the Western Conference with 16 points from a 5-4-1 WLT record, closely followed by Brampton Hitmen and Hamilton Thunder each with 15. Hamilton Thunder and the Hitmen meet at Brian Timmis Stadium Thursday. Two other games listed on Wednesday, Toronto Croatia vs. North York Astros and Toronto Supra vs. Durham Flames were both postponed and will be rescheduled. lazyboy
Results from the CPSL game played between St.Catherines Roma Wolves and Mississauga Olympians at Club Roma Park on 6-August-03 (20:20 start) 76 min...GOAL...SC Carlo Arghittu 85 min...PK...saved by SC Claudio Perri, taken by MO keeper Final Score: St.Catherines Roma Wolves 1 Mississauga Olympians 0 Players to watch: MO Danny Gallgher, MO Sam Borgh, SC Nick Aragona Players to avoid: SC Carlo Arghittu Commentary: A boring game played under muggy conditions. The game started out as a midfield battle and continued that way throughout. The field was wet from a brief downpour and it made the field slippery and the ball somewhat uncontrollable. Both teams settled into a pattern of quick runs down the sidelines but neither team could properly volley the ball into the opposing box. The second half started much the same and the crowd was getting very restless. Mid-way through the half the ref missed an obvious penalty against Roma and the Olympians were outraged. The game turned slightly after that and was decided on a PK awarded to Roma. SC Arghittu calmly slotted the ball passed the MO keeper. The game woke up after that with MO Borgh making some incredible runs only to be let down by the finishing. With time winding down, the ref made the right call and awarded the Olympians a PK. The spot kick was taken by the MO keeper and was easily saved by SC keeper Claudio Perri. The game ended with the Olympians having a couple of more attempts on net but without any success. Note1: A very chippy affair with some real un-professional dialogue on the field. Seems these two teams really do hate each other. I was shocked to hear former teammates Arghittu and Gallagher going at it all night. I don't feel like quoting what was said, but it was a bad ending to a bad game. Note2: It seems that teams are finally learning that to stop Roma you must stop Arghittu. A few weeks ago, Toronto Croatia had huge success by shadowing Arghittu with a stronger defender and limiting his mobility. Last night, MO defender Dwayne Wright played a flawless game marking Arghittu and completely kept him away from the ball. If not for his clumsy tackle in the box, he surely would've been my player of the game. Cheers, Lazyboy.
DJT
Thursday, August 7</u> Hamilton 1 Brampton 2 From the CPSL site: Brampton Hitmen took charge of the Western Conference with an important 2-1 victory over Hamilton Thunder at Brian Timmis Stadium in the only game played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League Thursday night. The win was a big one for the Hitmen, one of three teams along with St. Catharines Wolves and Hamilton fighting for top position and each taking its turn to occupy the top position. Hugo Herrera opened the scoring for Brampton at the 14th minute mark and Hitmen captain Phil Ionadi made it 2-0 after 32 minutes, but not before Hamilton were down to 10 men when Srdjan Markovic was ejected at 19 minutes. Hamilton fought to get back into the game but their lone marker came too late when Kevin De Serpa found the net four minutes from time. The win puts Brampton two points clear in the Western Conference with a 5-1-3WLT record for 18 points, that’s two points clear of Wednesday’s leader St. Catharines at 5-4-1 for 16 points and Hamilton 4-2-3 for 15 points. Friday, August 8</u> Vaughan 4 Toronto Supra 4 This match was broadcast on Rogers Television in Vaughan and Toronto (and possibly elsewhere?). Unfortunately all I saw was bits of the second half (too bad I didn't tape it as obviously it was an interesting game with 8 goals scored). In the first half Vaughan were up 2-0, the Supra tied it, and then Vaughan took a 3-2 lead. In the second half Vaughan scored again to make it 4-2, only for the Supra to come back from 2 goals down once again. The only goal I saw was Vaughan's fourth, but it was amazing: a Vaughan player had the ball near where the touchline and penalty area meet to the right of the Supra net and struck a low but hard cross towards the right corner of the goal area, which Vaughan's Aundrae Rollins (I think) was running towards from the centre of the goal area; when the ball arrived Rollins redirected it out of the air towards the inside of the right post by tipping it with the inside of his right foot behind his left leg, catching the keeper completely off guard. It was a goal that would make the highlight reel in any league. From the CPSL site: A controversial goal from the last kick of the match at the 94th minute salvaged a 4-4 tie for Toronto Supra in a chippy contest with Vaughan Sun Devils at the Dufferin Clark ground in Vaughan, just north of Toronto Friday night. Aundrea Rollins opened the scoring for the Sun Devils at the 14th minute mark and six minutes later veteran midfielder Willy Giammarra made it 2-0 for the home side. Supra forward Danny Amaral cut the lead to 2-1 at 25 minutes and just four minutes later and team-mate Adam Pecheco made it 2-2. Sun Devils took the lead two minutes before the interval on a goal by Joey Todaro for a 3-2 half-time score in a game riddled with untidy tackles and flared tempers. Rollins put Vaughan Sun Devils 4-2 up at 60 minutes, but at the 79th minute mark Supra’s Michael Di Luca made it an interesting 4-3. At what was the last kick of the match and four minutes into injury time Amaral, tied the game 4-4 for Toronto Supra when he hustled the ball just over the line with Sun Devils’ players appealing for hand ball. Rollins was voted the player of the game with two goals and a workmanlike performance. Toronto Supra remain unbeaten in regular league play with a 6-0-3 WLT record for 21 points for second place in the Eastern Conference, while Vaughan Sun Devils are at 4-1-3 in third position with 15 points. Toronto Croatia 4 London 1 From the CPSL site: At the other side of town, the Toronto Croatia fans deprived of wins this season breathed a sigh of relief when their Mississauga-based team showed outstanding form in defeating a gritty, but outplayed London City 4-1 at Memorial Park. Paul Grguric opened the scoring for Croatia at 21 minutes and new signings from Europe Jure Pavic at 27 minutes and Mario Zupetic at 34 minutes put Toronto Croatia 3-0 up. Peter Curic made it 4-0 at 41 minutes and that score held for most of the game until Keith Andrew scored a consolation goal for London City at 90 minute, a 4-1 final score. Toronto Croatia improves to a 3-7-0 record for nine points and 6th position in the Western Conference, while London City are at 3-5-2 for 11 points. DJT
Saturday, August 9</u> Ottawa 0 Metro 0 From the CPSL site: Ottawa Wizards were held to a scoreless tie by a reorganized Metro Lions at the OZ Stadium at Carp, near Ottawa, in the only game played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League on Saturday. Metro Lions followed up their impressive Open Canada Cup 5-3 win over Vaughan Sun Devils last Monday with this equally impressive league game against the unbeaten Wizards, both games under the new coaching duo of Goran Miscevic and Blagoje Bratic. Despite the lack of goals, the game was well played and entertaining, with goalkeepers Simon Eaddy of the Wizards and Gregory Drakes of Metro Lions both outstanding. Ottawa leads the Eastern Conference with a 8-0-2 WLT record for 26 points, while Metro Lions improve one point to 1-5-3 for six points.

Rocket Robin
Result of the Sunday August 10th, 2003 CPSL game between Brampton Hitmen and North York Astros played at Victoria Stadium in Brampton at 7:30pm. 41 min...Astros defender Pablo Politi cuts down Hugo Herrera from behind as he runs into Astros box after 35 yard run. Referee Steve Mortimer signals for a Penalty kick. 42 min...Hitmen Phil Ionadi GOAL...Ionadi blasts penalty kick low near middle of net but goalie Luciano Miranda dives to right post so misses the ball. 45 min...Hitmen Kurt Mella GOAL...BH Alex Morrison gets ball headed straight up and he beats three Astros surrounding him to cross from left to Hitmen Jonathan Bustamante on edge of box, he lobs ball to right to Mella who shoots 10 yarder to top left corner of net. 52 min...Hitmen Hugo Herrara GOAL...Astros defender Kurt Ramsey crashes down on contact with Herrera 35 yards out and that leaves Herrara in alone but wide to right and he races to end line to beat goalie and rolls 20 yard shot from right into open net that another defender almost rescues. 72 min...Hitmen Hugo Herrara GOAL...Herrara gets short pass on left and lobs 20 yard shot from left over goalie off his line on left. 80 min...Hitmen RED card...Adolfo Mella earns the direct Red card for slapping Astros player in face near center line. I had to confirm that one after the game with the referee. Final Score:.........Brampton Hitmen............4.................North York Astros.............0......... Attendance was about 200 which I thought was excellent for game time because there was actually a sunstorm with rain falling with the sun shining. The weathercasts were spooking people too warning thunderstorms etc. This steady attendance shows what a undefeated home record and exciting soccer can do in the GTA. Astros general manager Bruno Ierullo would like me to revise history by saying referee Steve Mortimer scored the third goal with referee's assistant Yakov Kiemakh getting the assist for not blowing play down for contact. Kurt Ramsey did play another 18 minutes after that injury but was then substituted with an early suspected separated shoulder for a tough night for the former CPSL Defender of the Year. The only thing I'll give them for roughness is there were some early hard tackles on Guillermo Compton Hall and that seemed to take him out of the game. Astros Francisco Dos Santos was the freekick man but couldn't put anything away. Hitmen goalie Roy Blanche earned the shutout with some important early saves covering his angles well. This guy seems so short but he covers a lot of net. Rocket Robin robing@eol.ca

DJT
quote:Originally posted by Jarrek Your question to CPSL president Vince Ursini about the low attendance in the CPSL was answered on the CPSL TV Show ... I saw that. Ziv asked about plans for increasing attendance. Ursini didn't actually answer. All he really said was that attendance has improved this season and that he hopes it will continue to improve --- never said how, beyond something like "clubs are asked to try to improve attendance". DJT
Some late stuff from the weekend, for completeness... Sunday, August 10</u> Laval 2 Metro 1 From the CPSL site: Paul Daccoberc opened the scoring for Laval at the 76th minute mark, just five minutes after Lions’ Kevin Rickets was ejected for serious foul play. Caswain Mason tied the game for Metro Lions after 87 minutes, but two minutes later Leo Collingo struck the all important winner for the Dynamites, a 2-1 final score. Laval now has a 4-4-0 WLT record for 12 points in the Eastern Conference, while Metro Lions continue to have difficulty with their league competition and have just one win with a 1-6-3 record for six points. Durham 4 Vaughan 5 Incredible, look at the scores from all of Vaughan's matches (score given as Vaughan-opponent, includes Cup matches): 0-0, 1-2, 4-3, 2-1, 5-1, 3-1, 3-3, 4-0, 3-5, 4-4, 5-4 --- there have been at least 8 total goals in each of their last 3 matches and at least 6 total goals in 6 of 11 matches overall! Poor Durham score four goals and still lose. From the CPSL site: There were goals galore at the Civic Stadium in Oshawa where Vaughan Sun Devils came out on top of a nine goal extravaganza, a 5-4 victory over struggling Durham Flames. David Mills led the procession with the first goal of the game for the home side after just four minutes, Jahmo Welch made it 2-0 at 13 minutes, but Cameron Medwin (20 minutes) and Willy Giammarra (24 minutes) brought the Sun Devils level at 2-2. Joey Todaro scored his first of two goals for Vaughan at the 31st minute mark, and Cameron Medwin scored his second two minutes later for a 4-2 Sun Devils lead. David Mills hit his second for the Flames after 62 minutes to bring the score to 4-3, Jamal Jupiter tied the game at 4-4 for the Flames eight minutes later, but Todaro scored the all important winner for the Sun Devils six minutes from time, a 5-4 final score.
