CDNFootballer
COSMOS, STRIKERS MOVE ON IN OPEN CUP AFTER NARROW ROUND OF GAMES http://www.nasl.com/news/2016/06/15/cosmos-strikers-move-on-in-open-cup-after-tight-knit-round-of-games Very little separated seven NASL clubs from their Major League Soccer (MLS) opposition in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night. Four of the seven matchups needed at least 120 minutes to settle the winner, while two of those games were decided in a penalty shootout. The New York Cosmos earned a second straight win in the East River Derby, needing an 88th-minute goal to move past New York City FC. The Fort Lauderdale Strikers advanced to the fifth round of the Cup after outlasting D.C. United in penalties.
Trillium
It should be remembered that the Cup includes a roster restriction on non-american players which tends to level the playing field, so a NASL club with good American core can play versus a MLS club without some of its Import players and match up well to the American players on the squad. I agree with the restrictions, but it helps explain why some MLS clubs do not go for it in the Cup, a smart NASL franchise...perhaps the Cosmos will break through and go CCL, gaining huge support in its market. New York Cosmos were also missing some of their top players for the match vs NYCFC : Nico Kranjar (just signed with the Rangers the other day), Duk, and Flores (Copa).
