SCF08
The Surinamese government will most likely pass a bill next month that would allow players with dual nationality to become part of the Surinamese National Football Team. They are the only country in CONCACAF that doesn't allow this yet. Former Champions League winner Nordin Wooter has been asked by the Surinamese FA if there would be enough players in The Netherlands that would consider playing for the team. Wooter contacted 100 players by letter and has received 85 positive responses in no time. It's not sure if the other 15 were negative or haven't responded yet. Some of the players that have reacted positively are http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gianni_Zuiverloon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evander_Sno http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelvin_Leerdam http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royston_Drenthe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rydell_Poepon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darryl_Lachman http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvin_Zeegelaar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milano_Koenders http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donovan_Slijngard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Koolwijk If this goes through, they are going to have a proper team and would serious contenders. Marc
It's one thing to respond to a letter. It's another to put your career aside and take four flights to play in San Salvador. These types of initiatives have worked (e.g. Jamaica) and have not worked (e.g. Jamaica.) Let's see where this goes.
Toje
Not nearly on the same level, but the Cayman Islands tried something similar 10 or so years ago. It didn't work out for them... http://www.theguardian.com/football/2000/mar/01/newsstory.sport2
jpg75
Those players listed seem to be a little heavily slanted to the backline. Dutch are not known for their defending or grit, so we'll see how good this side really is.
SCF08
It's one thing to respond to a letter. It's another to put your career aside and take four flights to play in San Salvador. These types of initiatives have worked (e.g. Jamaica) and have not worked (e.g. Jamaica.) Let's see where this goes. Most of these players will be coming over to Surinam during the winter-break in the Eredivisie (26th december) to play an exhibition match against W Connection FC (League champions of Trinidad&Tobago) to convince the Surinam governement to pass the bill. Not nearly on the same level, but the Cayman Islands tried something similar 10 or so years ago. Those players listed seem to be a little heavily slanted to the backline. Dutch are not known for their defending or grit, so we'll see how good this side really is. A bigger list has been released today with players who would be interested. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwight_Tiendalli http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvin_Emnes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glynor_Plet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florian_Jozefzoon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tjaronn_Chery http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_Waterman http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Donk http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgil_Misidjan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_Alberg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajiv_van_La_Parra http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicandro_Breeveld http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dion_Malone http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorenzo_Davids http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eloy_Room http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigel_Hasselbaink http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jarchinio_Antonia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%A9nero_Zeefuik http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorenzo_Burnet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitchell_Donald http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giliano_Wijnaldum Not all players will be granted permission to travel to the exhibition match by their clubs but clubs will have to release them if the Surinamese government will approve the dual nationality for these players for WCQ2018 matches. You can make a proper quality team with those players. There will probably be some bigger players as well who are not known yet or who are still hoping for a Dutch national team call-up.
