CSL 2009, Week 7

Recommended Posts

Result of the Saturday June 27, 2009 CSL game between North York Astros and Toronto Croatia played at Downsview Park in North York at 3:00pm.

20 min…Croatia Tommy Ples GOAL…TC Mario Pupic freekick from 25 yards on left has charging Ples run up and get foot to ball at 7 yards to tip it over goalie Arthur Zaslavski on left side of net.

28 min…TC Johnny Bustamante rush up field and chips ball to TC Tommy Ples who’s pulled down in box. Referee Dave Barrie calls for a Penalty kick.

29 min…Croatia Mario Pupic GOAL…Pupic blasts a rolling penalty kick into left corner of net as goalie slides to right.

32 min…Croatia Niko Pesa GOAL...TC Ainsley Deer has trouble on left controlling ball at Astros 35 yard line but passes forward to TC Hayden Fitzwilliams. Fitzwilliams taps ball along to charging TC Deer who chips cross from 10 yards for Pesa to blast shot from 10 yards up middle over sprawling goalie in center of net.

60 min…Astros RED card…Nick Milodrag earns his second Yellow card for slap on TC player although he was knocked down at TC 35 yard line. He picked up his first card at 28 minutes for a tackle on Hayden Fitzwilliams. I believe these were the only two cards of the game.

77 min…Astros Diego Maradona GOAL…Maradona rush on right and his low 25 yard shot is under diving goalie Sandi Matika to left post.

83 min…Croatia Niko Pesa GOAL…Pesa gets pass in middle of crowd of players and his 15 yard shot is into far right of net beyond flying goalie.

Final Score:………….North York Astros……….1…………Toronto Croatia…………4…………

Attendance was about 50 on this very hot and sunny day with a strong cooling breeze from the west.

This game was moved from Esther Shiner Stadium to Downsview Park because of the City of Toronto workers strike. As Downsview Park is a federal government owned facility, it is not affected by the labour dispute. There are two artificial turf pitches beside each other. The western one was used today at the request of Rogers community television for broadcast this night. It would have been better for the crowd in attendance if the eastern one had been used so we wouldn’t have to squint into the sun the whole game. It’s a good thing the television tapes the game as with a 28 minute break between halves, we started to wonder whether the Astros were going to come back to play the second half. Croatia stayed on the pitch but under a tent on the sideline.

Astros goalie Arthur Zaslavski had to be sharp or the score would have been much worse. Diego Maradona had a few identical runs in the second half like the one on which he scored but otherwise the Astros offence was worth mentioning.

Astros are now all alone as the worst team in the league with a 0 win, 5 loss record. London City earned a point last night against Serbian White Eagles with a 1-1 tie for their first result of the year. Toronto Croatia rises to best team in the league with 5 wins and 1 tie in the balanced schedule.

Next game for the Astros is next Saturday at Downsview Park. This game was scheduled for this facility since the beginning of the year. As soon as these teams left the field, the TFC Academy vs. Brampton Lions game started at 5:30pm. This game had been switched from Sunday at Lamport Stadium to this facility also because of the city workers’ strike. Astros and TFC Academy were the last two teams in the league I hadn’t seen this year.

Other results thus far in CSL Week 7

SWE 1 - London City 1

- London City played a very strong game under new coach Andrew Loague. They've got a much better team this season, thanks to some quality players who they recruited after the folding of Windsor Border Stars as well as a couple of new players from the US.

- SWE is off to a slower start (5 points from 4 games) than they would like and will need to grab maximum points from their few games.

Brampton 3 - TFCA 1

- good to see David Guzman and Daniel Nascimento scoring goals for Brampton. I think the Lions will be a very tough team by mid season.\\

- TFCA had a nice start to the season but have been beaten soundly their last 2 games. This is similar to last season when TFCA was more fit and cohesive than their opponents due to training together all off-season and was able to get good results the first few weeks. Will they be able to turn it around? Last season, they struggled mightily in the middle of the season. This year, they are a much more talented team so my guess is that they won't get smacked around as much this year.

Trois Rivieres 3 - St. Catherines 0

- the totally revamped TR roster has picked up where last year's squad left off, dominating the national division.

- St. Catherine's has been surprisingly good this season. This was their first loss of the season and sit on 10 points from 5 games.

Result of the Sunday June 28, 2009 CSL game between Italia Shooters and Portugal FC played at St Joan of Arc Catholic High School in Maple at 5:00pm.

47 min…PFC Carlos Nogueira GOAL…PFC Gustavo Serrano cross from left near left corner flag has Nogueira wait for ball to settle down and his 12 yard shot up middle is into low left of net beyond diving goalie Camilo Benzi.

85 min…Shooters Julio Garcia GOAL…Garcia blasts 22 yard freekick from left just under top right corner of net before goalie Mike Silva could move.

Final Score:………Italia Shooters………..1…………Portugal FC…………1……….

Attendance was about 70 on this warm overcast day with a breeze from the east. It had rained earlier in the afternoon which may have scared some of the walk up crowd from coming and it rained a few hours after the game but there was no rain during the game. Still slightly better than the Astros 50 fans and TFC Academy’s 60 fans at yesterdays games. Geez where is everybody?

The tie was a fair result but the Shooters dominated the second half after the PFC goal. I thought the Shooters had at least six cornerkicks in the second half. PFC was really in a defensive mode and the players were looking for counterattacks which didn’t seem to materialize. Kadian Lecky was playing upfront for the Shooters but the PFC defenders always did enough to keep him from having a clear, direct shot. Shooters Aundrae Rollins had the best chance for a game winner at 55 minutes when he received a cross from the left and connected on a 3 yard header but goalie Mike Silva stood and got his arm on it deflecting it wide left of the post.

Referee Gianni Facchini called a lot of free kicks for fouls but didn’t give out many cards.

With this tie the first for Italia Shooters this season their record rises to 2 wins, 3 losses, 1 tie and PFC record stays a place ahead of the Shooters at 2 wins, 1 loss and 3 ties. Next game for Shooters is another home game on Sunday July 5th at 5:00pm against Serbian White Eagles. Portugal’s next game is supposed to be Friday at Lamport Stadium but may have to be moved because of the City of Toronto’s employees strike.

Two new coaches in the league, Andrew Loague and I heard the Turkish coach from the Astros quit and they played their last game under a new coach.

I saw the London vs SWE game on Rogers Saturday, London played a very good defensive game, they were well organize at the back and their GK was excellent. SWE players were too individualist but they deserved better luck.

I'm happy to see that Brampton have finally found their chemistry and the players have started to play up to their potential. TFC has to re-group and understand their defensive mistakes.

The Shooters could be a very good team again this year if it wasn't for the fact that more than half of their players play for other teams in the OSL league, the league needs to correct this for the next season and not allowed CSL players to play anywhere else during the season.

Is Slevn Lammie playing anywhere in the CSL this year?

He's still rehabbing from a serious injury incurred at the end of last season.

Expect to see him make his return to the CSL in the next 3-4 weeks (maybe sooner) with SWE
