Saputo wary of Ultras?

Recommended Posts

Just read this on Radio-Canada, and it would seem from reading it that Saputo is wary of having an "Ultra" section because it might offend some of the families coming to Stade Saputo. In my opinion, Montreal needs an Ultra section to have any sort of ambiance. Toronto did well in having a section like this. At times Ultra groups around the world have been considered as crude and violent but at the same time without them, the atmospheres at football games would be like going to a lawn bowling match.

If he's really bent on thinking that way he needs to do some research.

The first thing I'd point out is that there is a difference between the "Ultra" who throws a Vespa off the 2nd deck of the San Siro and the person you will attract to the game in Canada. A lot of the violence you see between groups often has a lot to do with societal problems as opposed to simply a fans mentality. With proper cooperation between groups and the club, as well as security measures it will never come to anything serious.

Second, marketing to families is a great way to sell your product to a bunch of cheap and un-loyal customers. They are price sensitive and too often looking for "entertainment" as opposed to being interested in the sport.

As was already said, the supporters bring an atmosphere that sells the sport and are basically a marketers dream. They by nature are the most loyal customers you have. Pushing them away for a bunch of people who are more concerned about a free t-shirt and hotdog over what’s happening on the field is lunacy.
