Ian Kennett
Some people have pretty weird ways of getting out a message. So, Toronto MLS will be successful because of the "ethnic" support. Hmm! I guess all the Scots and Englishmen, and Irishmen and - wait - they don't watch soccer in Toronto. That must mean the Bosnians and the Greeks and the Spanish and the Germans - no, not them either. Hmm! How about the Brazilians and the Mexicans and the El Salvadorans and the Chileans? What? Not them, either? Well, then, it must be the Egytians and the Congolese, and the Nigerians. Wait a minute! The Thais and the Japanese and the Chinese and the Malaysians! No. the Jamaicans, Trinidadians - Crap! Who does that leave? How about CANADIANS who love soccer? Well. there aren't many of those either, but for crying out loud, get off this ethnic business, MLSE! Wasn't it Jacques Parizeau who blamed a lost election in Quebec on the "ethnic" vote? What did he mean? Non-white, not sufficiently francophone? Try this! Build a very good team that plays attractive soccer. Maybe, -dare I say it? - sign a couple of well know "ethnic" players, advertise through Maple Leaf Entertainment, and have reasonable ticket prices. Then, perhaps some of those ethnics might just show up! Sheesh!!
Ian Kennett
To summarize, people will come out to soccer games if the product is entertaining and if they like soccer. Their ethnic background is not important nor is it relevant! MLSE should drop the use of "ethnic" and instead market a good team to people who may enjoy soccer.
