cyris2k
NEW FACES, OLD FACES Chelsea reserve player invited to camp, Metros try to 'discover' Serioux, re-sign Lisi Jan. 19, 2006 Chelsea reserve team defender-midfielder Joe Keenan has been invited to the Metros' foreigner tryout camp at the Giants Stadium bubble next week, according to team sources. The Metros also have put in for a discovery player pick for Canadian international defender-midfielder Adrian Serioux, sources said. Serioux most recently played with Millwall in the English Football League. Just because the Metros have put in a bid for a discovery player, it doesn't mean that they will sign him. They will get first dibs on the player before another team can get a first look. Now, it is up to the league to sign Serioux and place him with the Metros. The club also re-signed veteran midfielder Mark Lisi to a contract, the team announced. The Metros had refrained from picking up Lisi's option in December, but re-signed him for a lower salary. Lisi, a member of the team since 2002, has the longest tenure of any current Metros player.

matthew
quote:Originally posted by sstackho Can anyone explain what a "discovery claim" means re MLS? I don't feel motivated enough to look it up exactly, but basically most internationals are allocated by MLS to its clubs. However, you only have a set number of allocations (you get one for missing the playoffs and one for each quality player you lose). Domestic players (and foreigners who went the NCAA route) are acquired in the draft or are allocated. So to claim a lesser known foreign player or domestic players outside of regular channels, teams 'discover' them. They get six a season. Basically Metros is saying that they want Serioux and Serioux has shown he's interested in Metros/MLS, but since all signings go through the league it's not as simple as it is in other leagues. And I think if other teams decide they want him, it gets more complicated, but that's where my knowledge breaks down. Generally it's a formality. Most of the time teams get and keep their 'discovery' players. For teams like Kansas City who rarely get foreign allocations, most of their senior internationals are 'discovered' - whether they be lower level guy like Alex Zotinca whom they 'discovered' from the KC Comets indoor team or a name guy like former Everton man Paul Rideout (whom they discovered in China). cheers, matthew

Andrew W
Here's what the MLSnet website says about Discovery players. Obviously it was updated before the start of the 2005 season. (D.) DISCOVERY SIGNINGS Each team has the opportunity to make six (6) discovery signings per season (up from three (3) discovery signings allowed in 2004). The two expansion teams in 2005 will have ten (10) discovery signings each in 2005 and six (6) in 2006 and beyond. The last day for discovery player signings is September 15, 2005 - coinciding with the close of the secondary international transfer window and the roster freeze date. The six (6) discovery signings can be used to fill senior roster spots only.
