Non-league teams in London

Hi all,

There is a chance that I will be in London in late February or early March and I am interested in seeing a non-league game. Can anyone tell me if there are Conference teams in London? If not, teams in the lower leagues like the Ryman league would be fine as well. I identified AFC Wimbledon in the Ryman league but I am not sure if they are in London proper. It is very important that the stadiums be accessible by tube or bus.

I am not at all interested in seeing the EPL teams as they are ridiculously expensive and I have no desire to sit in a huge stadium. I want to experience a typical small "British style" stadium. Originally I wanted to see Leyton Orient of League Two but it might not work for the dates I will be in London.

thanks,

I don't know why if you don't want to see an EPL match you have to jump all the way down to Conference, four tiers lower. Paying for tickets? Sorry, but as one who has been to games one and two levels lower you can still see some fine atmospheres at that kind of game.

I would go to see Brentford, lots of history, small cosy stadium, the team is doing well near the top of League One, and you can get there easily inside London. Web at http://www.brentfordfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/Home/0,,10421,00.html

I'm sure BWA will be able to help you in your quest of non-league soccer in London. Come to think of it I believe Barnet (League 2) are based in North London. I also think there are two-London based Conference sides.

Late Feb early March? You should just make a quick little flight to Vienna for the Austria-Canada game. ;)

Thanks for your reply. What is BWA? Can you tell me the names of the two London based Conference teams ?

I wish I could hop over to Austria but that will not be possible.

thanks

BWA= Blue and White Army, a poster who generally resides in the thread called "English non-league". He follows the Conference and lower leagues quite closely and should be able to give you some pointers. Why dont you post this question in that thread so the guys there can help you?

ps, AFC Wimbledon is the greatest and most famous (infamous?)non-league team in Britain, so try to go see them!

Pay no attention to Jeffrey S - he's obviously a bit of a glory hunter. ;)

There are dozens of clubs in London, many of them easily accessible by public transport. Is there any particular area in London that would be easiest for you to get to?

I support Hanwell Town (Step 5), located in west London. There is a bus stop immediately at the ground, which connects to several tube stations (including Ealing Broadway and Perivale on the Central line).

There's quite a Canadian theme at Hampton & Richmond Borough's Beveree Stadium - two Canadian players (strikers Elliott Godfrey and Jon Henry-Hayden) and a Beaver Bar! The Voyageurs actually sponsor Godfrey, and our logo appears in their official club program. HRBFC are one of the top clubs in the Ryman Premier (Step 3), and the ground is a short walk from a train station.

Up north, not too far from Barnet, is Cockfosters (Step 6). They are quite close to Cockfosters station, the northern-most stop on the Piccadilly line.

Lots of neat clubs in east London (i.e. Dulwich Hamlet, the only amateur club ever to have a full England international player on their books; Barking & East Ham United) and south London as well.

Thank you so much BWA. Some of the teams you mention seem to end their season at the end of January(at least that is what the fixture list seems to indicate). I have pretty much settled on seeing Barnet FC of League two as they will be in London on the 4th of March, the only Saturday I will be there. It is amazing how many London teams will not be in London during that weekend.I take it teams like Dulwich Hamlet and East Ham United play in the Ryman League(?). Do any of these teams play dutring the week?

In any case, you have given me enough info to proceed.

All the best

Albert

BWA, you have just made my day!! You are a gentleman. The Wealdstone game sounds terrific. I will check it out.

Thanks for the other info but I am arriving on the morning of the 28th and leaving on the 6th so those will not work out.

Wealdstone currently play at Northwood's ground. I've never been there, but I've heard it's a little bit run down, graffiti and all that.

Wealdstone used to have their own ground, but sold it to move to a nearby location. They sold it to Tesco, the largest supermarket chain over here. But the money was to change hands through a third, intermediate party - which suddenly went backrupt right after Tesco had paid them. Somehow Wealdstone ended up losing their ground and not getting a single penny back for it.

Nice club, though, with some of the more loyal and ardent supporters in all of non-league footie. And Billericay are flying at the moment in the Ryman Prem, so it should be a good match.

There is actually a Wealdstone fan who attended the Toronto Lynx v. Hampton Road Mariners match back in 2002. I met up with him earlier this season when Wealdstone played away at Hampton & Richmond Borough.

There's also a good chance there will be some games on Wed 1 March, and possibly even Thurs 2 March, but Sunday is more or less reserved for the beer leagues.
