Someone I know mentioned that he was certain that one of the big clubs in Italy was owned by a Canadian.

Is there any truth to this?

I don't think so, and certainly not one of the big teams.

However, there was a rumour a couple of years ago that a Canadian was going to buy Lazio. He claimed it was a false rumour. Whether that was the case or he just decided not to buy the team after all, nothing more was ever said about this. Perhaps this is what the person who told you this was thinking about.

DoyleG is correct, Stronach owns Austria Vienna. Google stronach "austria vienna".

Kia Joorabchian, the entrepreneur behind the investment into Corinthians is said to have both British and Canadian citizenships. While he may have a Canadian passport, it seems he is based out of the UK.

The firm, Media Sport Investment, created some significant controversy when it made the investment because Corinthians is the best supported club in Sao Paulo. It didn't help when their first investment was Argentinian, Carlos Tevez. Other since brought to Corinthians include Carlos Alberto from Porto, Rogerio from Benfica, and Gustavo Nery from Werder Bremen. Luxumborgo turned down an offer to coach the club before taking the job at Real Madrid. The controversy continues because the club has not performed well at the beginning of the 2005 season. There also rumours of training ground fist fights between Tevez and other teammates (may become the Brazilian Newcastle rather than the Brazilian Chelsea).

What concerns many Corintianos (fans) is that this investment appears to be strictly a financial investment with financial objectives. The strategy is to build the club into a global brand. The question is whether this is possible with a Brazilian club.

Funny that we were talking about Austria Vienna last Thursday and they were having problems earlier that day:

quote:From uefa.com

Officials at the Austrian Football Association will meet on Monday to discuss the abandonment of last night's [May 5] fixture between FK Austria Wien and Grazer AK. The visitors were leading 3-0 when a group of Austria supporters invaded the pitch to vent their anger at both the performance and the running of the club. Attempts by general manager Toni Polster and sports director Günter Kronsteiner to defuse the situation failed, leaving referee Dietmar Drabek no option but to end the game. "This is a big shock for us - the fans have put the club into a really bad situation," Polster said.

The ruling was to award GAK the win 0-3 (the actual score is significant because both teams are in the title race and goal difference counts) and force Austria Vienna to play their next home match behind closed doors and pay a fine.

I think I read somewhere that the Coach was fired as a result.
