2004 CONCACAF Under-19 Final Round Qualification Starts Friday

The field is set for the 2004 CONCACAF Under-19 Women’s Final Round Qualification that will take place in two venues in Canada from Friday, May 28 – Sunday, June 6.

The eight-team tournament in Ottawa’s Frank Clair Stadium and Montreal’s Molson Stadium (McGill University) will qualify two CONCACAF nations to the 2004 FIFA U-19 World Championship in Thailand from 10-27 November. [more] [tickets]

No stranger to staging an U-19 Women’s competition, Canada was the venue for the inaugural FIFA U-19 World Championship in 2002. Canada reached the final, but dropped a 1:0 result to the USA in ‘golden goal’ overtime.

The 2004 CONCACAF U-19 Final Round has the host, Canada, in Group A, along with Mexico, Panama and Jamaica, while the USA competes in Group B along side Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago and Dominican Republic.

This is the second time that CONCACAF has staged a qualifying event for the U-19 World Championship the previous one took place in Trinidad & Tobago in 2002.

Scouting the teams

Canada – Coached by Ian Bridge, Canada advanced to the CONCACAF U-19 Women’s Final Round Qualification as the host … Canada will be looking to qualify for the first time to the FIFA U-19 World Championship after hosting the event two years ago … Canada achieved their highest finish ever in their women’s football history in claiming the runners-up spot at the inaugural FIFA U-19 World Championship in 2002 after falling 1:0 in overtime to the USA in an “All-CONCACAF Final.”

Costa Rica – One of two Central American teams, Costa Rica is making their second consecutive appearance at the CONCACAF U-19 Women’s Final Round Qualification … Led by technical director Ricardo Rodriguez, the ticas won their second UNCAF (Unión Centroamericana de Fútbol) U-19 crown after defeating the host, Panama 5:3 in the final match of the four-team event in Ciudad de Panamá last March.

Dominican Republic – Under technical director Santiago Morél, the Dominican Republic are making their first-ever appearance in a CONCACAF Final Round Qualification in football history … The dominicanas eliminated the Bahamas and US Virgin Islands in home-and-away series, to earn one of the three CFU (Caribbean Football Union) berths.

Jamaica – One of three from the Caribbean Zone, Jamaica advanced into the Final Round after eliminating the Cayman Islands and Puerto Rico in consecutive home-and-away series match-ups … With Christopher Bender at the helm, the reggae girlz are making their second consecutive appearance in a CONCACAF U-19 Final Round.

Mexico – Mexico have become one of the top teams in the region … The tricolor earned a bye into the 2004 U-19 Final Round Qualification … Under technical director Leonardo Cuellar, Mexico are the first Spanish-speaking nation to have qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup (1999), Under-19 World Championship (2002) and Olympic Games (2004).

Panama – The second of two Central American teams, Panama is making a consecutive appearance at the CONCACAF U-19 Final Round … With Ezequiel Fernandez at the helm, the canaleras were runners-up this past March at the UNCAF U-19 tournament, losing in the final game to Costa Rica 5:3 in Ciudad de Panamá.

Trinidad & Tobago – Advanced to their second consecutive CONCACAF U-19 Final Round … Trinidad & Tobago eliminated Anguilla and Surinam during their Caribbean Zone home-and-away series preliminaries … Jamaal Shabazz is in charge of the soca princesses.

USA – Captured the first FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship in 2002 after defeating the host Canada 1:0 in finals … The USA outscored their opponents 34-1 in three games during the CONCACAF U-19 Final Round Qualification in 2002 and then 26-2 in six games at the FIFA tournament … Newly appointed Mark Krikorian is at the helm of the stars & stripes.
