Canada looks to make changes against Panama in Olympic soccer qualifier

posted February 27 @ 22:26, EST

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (CP) - Coach Even Pellerud is looking to make changes for Canada's game against Panama on Saturday at the CONCACAF's Olympic women's soccer qualifying tournament.

The changes are primarily to give some of his players a run-out against the Panamanian women, trounced 6-1 by the host side on Thursday. The only possible injury question mark is defender Tanya Dennis, whose injury Pellerud refused to disclose.

Pellerud watched Panama play Costa Rica after his Canadian side blanked Jamaica 6-0 Thursday in its opening match.

"Costa Rica has improved since the last time and they were clearly the better team," Pellerud said. "Panama has good individual players but they're not well-organized and not very fit. But very physical and they have some really good soccer players, especially up front. But they have defensive problems."

Canada has the weapons up front to make Panama play for those weaknesses.

The two countries have never played. Panama, ranked 52 places below Canada at No. 63 in the world, only made it into the tournament when Guatemala's Football Association was suspended by FIFA.

The eight-team qualifying tournament covers North and Central America and the Caribbean. Canada is in a pool with No. 46 Costa Rica, Panama, and No. 72 Jamaica.

The top two teams from each pool advance to play in crossover semifinals. The two tournament finalists qualify for Athens.

Group B features No.2 U.S., No. 30 Mexico, No. 40 Trinidad and Tobago and No. 44 Haiti.

Friday, Maribel Dominguez scored three goals to lead Mexico to an 8-1 victory over Trinidad and Tobago.

If things go according to plan, Canada will play Mexico in one semifinal while the U.S. takes on Costa Rica in the other.

Not including the Americans, Canada's record against the other teams heading into the tournament was 22-0-0 with the goal count 104-5 in favour of Canada.

Despite that lopsided record, Pellerud says his players have been all business.

"I have been pretty impressed by how focused they have been," he said. "But it's not going to be an easy ride. Costa Rica is much stronger now and Mexico can, on a good day, beat us.

But he acknowledged his team is a heavy favourite to make it to Athens.

"Of course on paper, yes, I agree with you."

Notes: Canadian men's coach Frank Yallop is planning a camp for his European-based players in Manchester, England, from March 28 to April 1. The camp will include a closed-door game against a club side. The Canadian men will train at Manchester United's old training facility.
