TIM HOWARD?!?!?!?!? :)

Actually, from checking a Metros site, it looks like they have only had three black keepers in their existence.. lets look at them, shall we:

Tim Howard - Currently starting for Manchester United... ummm, no

Zach Thornton - Started last year for Chicago, nope....

Russell Payne - Bingo!

The long and short of it: Former US Under 21 International, been with Colorado and NY/NJ in the MLS, and has had season long stints with Derry City in Ireland Premier and SV Elversberg in the Regionalliga. He also has played a couple seasons in the A-League before his MLS stint.

Well, if this rumour is true, and the one about Goddard trying out for the Lynx is, the Lynx should have a decent crop of keepers to choose from.

Lynx Open Trials - Keeper Search Heating Up

Richard Goddard, Russell Payne linked to the Lynx

Despite the lack of Lynx signings at this point of the pre-season, rumours are heating up over who will attempt to fill the massively oversized novelty style shoes of former Lynx keeper Theo Zagar.

Good sources have indicated that the Toronto Lynx have a strong crop of keepers at the club trials this year. Aside from returning backups James Kryger and Brian Rowland, TorontoUltras.net can confirm the names of two of the keepers making waves with the club.

Richard Goddard, Trinidad International of Ottawa Wizards and Charlotte Eagles fame is the first name to be linked with the club. Goddard has a very good pedigree at the A-League level, leading the Charlotte Eagles to the playoffs. With a very similar squad, and without Goddard, the Eagles were reduced to a very poor season and self-relegation. Goddard, who turns 26 today, is looking to come back following serious work visa issues essentially forced him on the sideline last year.

Also connected to the Lynx is former American U21 player, Russell Payne. The athletically imposing Payne has spent the last two seasons in Europe starting for Irish club Derry City and German Regionalliga club SV Elversberg. Payne has also had success in the A-League, leading New Orleans to a 15-4 record in 1997. Payne has also been backup keeper for 3 MLS teams and a Dutch second division squad.

Word from trials is that many players, as always, are travelling from Europe and South America for an attempt to make the squad. Once we receive news on these players, we will be sure to pass them on.
