Goalkeeper sent off during penalty shootout

GABORONE (Reuters) - Botswana goalkeeper Modiri Marumo has been sent off during a penalty shootout for striking his opposite number during Malawi's Cosafa Cup quarter-final win.

Marumo was beaten on Sunday by the first three kicks taken by Malawi and lashed out at opposing keeper Philip Nyasulu, who had attempted to give him a conciliatory pat on the back of the head.

He was shown the red card by Mozambican referee Mateus Infante and had to be replaced by defender Michael Mogaladi. Botswana then missed their third kick from striker Tshepiso Molwantwa after which Ganizani Malunga gave Malawi an unassailable 4-1 lead with a shot that Mogaladi had little chance of stopping.

Marumo's indiscretion during the shootout came after a solid performance during the 90 minutes when he made several key saves for the host. The competition rules do not allow for extra time.

Botswana had taken the lead in the 21st minute with a left-foot curling shot from Masego Ntshingane, who plays college soccer in the United States. The hosts could have added a second soon after but Nyasulu made a point-blank save to deny Barney Marman.

Malawi had a series of eight corners in the last 10 minutes of the first half but failed
